View Full Version : What's the Fastest You've Ever Been In a Car?

Honor system. Be aware that if you mention when and where precisely and it's a public street/freeway you may be incriminating yourself (and if it's on a street you're just an asshole to boot.)
Me. 130mph on a freeway for just a couple seconds. It's where 4th tops out for me and the Vette pulls pretty hard all the way there. I'd like to do an actual top speed run someday, but I'd want to square away a ton of safety items first as I don't have a death wish of any kind.
Bonus points if you have video and it was on a lake bed or sanctioned event.

140 on a closed course, professional driver. But the closed course started to veer as it approached a road that looked similar to the brea canyon exit.
That was naturally aspirated, and it felt like the acceleration was still strong till I left off the gas.

I don think my 4032 forgings would take boost in overdrive for very long.

160 in the GTO, not sure int the Eclipse, speedo only went to 155 and I was way past that.

I know the Cobras (like Sean's) don't do high speed runs because the ring tolerances are pretty tight and the higher sustained temps of a high speed run (like a real flying mile) have a tendency, apparently, to start melting the rings and fusing them to the cylinder wall. Which most people find to be sub-optimal.

Lol
I filed my rings to spec for an 800hp boosted ap, so Im not so worried about the rings. Theyre also stainless and thus resist detonation damage unlike moly rings. (Keep that in mind for the snake) But Ive melted 2 pistons already, I trust those JE forgings about as far as I could throw em
When I have money Id like to get a new block, cam and pistons.

~130 two nights a week on the 91 between lemon and beach in a stock 57 Starchief. The speedo stopped at 120.
135 by the tach crossing CA/NV line in 65 FI vette
100 continuously from Karlsruhe to Amsterdam in a 56 Mercedes 190
100 plus up the oxnard grade from Santa Barbara to Tustin in a 68 GP 400ci racing a ford.
90+ up cajon pass in 73 F250 428ci pulling a 25 ft offshore cruiser racing a 454 dullie pulling identical boat.
140 on funtucky speedway thru the front straight driving a drivetech stock car.
Would love to do 200+

Used to have a turbo Eclipse until I crashed it into my GTO. I should have kept it, I miss it's handling. I did that part right.

178mph on an 1987 Vance and Hines prepped FZR1000 while on my way to see a cute blonde at UCSB the CHP officer that gave me the ticket said the "Helo" called off the pursuit when I was out running him (chopper of the time only did 150)
I know wasn't really a car story, so here.
The fastest in a car was 165mph on the 605 at 3am back in the early '80s

133 in the Chevelle (in the 1/4), 160 on Phil's old Katana and 170 in the Cobra.

Id be willing to bet your car would go faster than mine. I think we both have enough hp to push our drag limits... and I know your car has got to be way more aerodynamic with that dam.
Lets test it... orangethorpe, right now.

I've gone to redline in 5th, The math says 165 so thats what I did (6500 X .84 X 3.73)
Some day I would love to go up to 6th. My car was drag limited to 186, but that is with 150 less hp

I'm also a fair bit lighter at 3,100lbs full wet, but I still think you have so much more HP and are lower to the ground (less frontal area) that you'd be faster. I'd probably not melt any pistons though so I could win by just managing to get to a top speed. And because it hasn't been wet in a month it runs right now! :jester:

I thought I told this story...
2:30am, 210 freeway, way more than seven years ago. Weather was light, sparse rain but overall visibility was good.
1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 with all the bells and whistles, coming on at Lone Hill, I look right and in the lane next to me is a couple of kids in their dads 3000GT VR4 (I stole mine all nice and legal like, some deadbeats buy the nicest cars.) are looking me over as we wait for the green arrow.
So up onto the freeway we go as the rain starts. 40, 50, 70, 90...
Neck and neck all the way to 145mph with the rain sheeting off the windshield and the useless wipers letting out a moan as they crossed the screen.
He blinked and backed off at 147, I didn't.
The car was as solid as a rock and probably would have kept accelerating but I passed some poor fool in something small and slow and nearly scared him into the center divider, snapped me back to my senses and off of the pedal.
Spent the rest of the night under 75, felt like I was going backwards.
Best freeway frolic was in a pair of 190 MBZ's coming up the 605 nose to tail with about eight inches between us at about 95mph. Middle of the night, clear sailing with no one around except some guy in the number two lane minding his own business doing the limit, probably drunk or at least half asleep out there at that time of the morning. As we came up on him in our lane, my partner went to the right, I went to the left and we passed him on either side at speed. Once we cleared the car I moved back into the number two lane in front while my buddy jumped back into the lane behind me.
So what home boy must have thought was one car came up at breakneck speed, split in two, passed him and reformed into one car and drove off into the night.

When we were racing pulling our boats up Cajon pass we passed a toyo truck with overhead camper and pulling a trailer - probably doing all of 20mph. He's probably still wondering what when by him on each side at the same time.
Rain story. I was driving a 1 ton survey truck northbound on Magnolia nearing Garden Grove blvd. Those who know the area know how it floods there now, well 30 years ago it was worse. So I'm passing cars using the flooded empty right lane throwing out a nice surfing wake and I see a small sports car without side windows, too late to slow down so I just kept going - felt sorry for the driver, probably still cussing me out. LOL

We doing scary stories now? SRT charger was egging me on for a while on the freeway. Didnt feel like risking getting caught to prove the Vette could beat a car with less hp, and sig more weight... but he wouldnt leave me alone mile after mile.
So I dropped it in third and tapped the throttle for him to start, and he went for it. The closed course freeway was curving a bit, so when I punched it my rear wheels broke free, and I slid into his lane a bit. Scared us both Im sure.

When did you get your speeding ticket . . after you bought the Mach?
On the way home from buying the Mach actually. I set the cruise control at like 80 and when I was in the middle of nowhere for hours when the speed limit was 75 I was fine. I drove my Mt Mountain and did not adjust my cruise control when the speed limit dropped and did not think of it as I was not zooming past people and left it. I saw the CHP on the side of the road and did not even think about it. Guy said he clocked me at 83 but only wrote me up for 80.

One of the Lake El Mirage vids. 180mph here and that when my high compression LS6 was in the car. Cant wait to see what a boosted LS3 will do.

Ron has a funny story about this. Basically, no one got a read on his speed . . and the chopper couldn't really keep up. He had a colorful chat with the popo at the end of it, but noone was shot, beat, or taken to jail.
Your mileage may vary.

BTW, I think the world record for speeding ticket speed is in TX for like 240. Some rich dude in a Koeniggsegg AIR. Honestly, that's full on fucktard territory and should be dis-incentivized pretty heavily.

I guess since Phil is through it's safe to talk about. I was on my way home from Phil's house one night around midnight and the freeway was empty. So I jump on the Cobra and run it up to 165 for a little while and then get off to head home. On the side streets I'm doing the speed limit when I get lit up by a helicopter. As soon as that happens, I pull over and shut the car off. About 2 or 3 minutes later 5 police cars roll up on me. They came up to the car and asked me how fast I was going because the helicopter couldn't keep up with me. I told them I didn't know. They ended searching my car and me then had me lift my hood. I told them everything was legal and then they let me go.
