View Full Version : 94cobra69ss396's Next Project: 1964 F100

Now that the Explorer's V8 conversion is done and Eric's donor Explorer is out of the driveway I have room to start my next project which is my wife's 1964 Ford F100. It was purchased new in 1964 by her grandfather who gave it to her father just before he passed away in 1981. Her dad gave it to her in 1992 but it didn't run. It has been sitting in his back yard since then.
Plans are to sand it down and prep it for paint. We are planning to paint it red and white in the factory style two tone design. For the powertrain I have a 1995 BBC 454 and TH400 that both have 16,000 miles on them. I don't plan to do anything to the engine besides change the intake so I can run a Holley 750 carb. The engine came out of a motor home so I think it should make plenty of torque.
Here's how she looks today.

Me too. We're excited to get started on it and I hope to get it done fairly quickly. My wife and I started dating back in July of 1994 and it has just been sitting at her dad's house this whole time. I'm going to start disassembly and sanding tomorrow after work. It is going to be a family project, her dad wants to be involved and this will be the vehicle my oldest daughter who is now 11 will be driving when she is 16.

But a Chevy engine in a Ford??
94cobra69ss396
05-10-2012, 11:24 PM
Yep. I have two Fords with Ford engines and two Chevys with Chevy engines. I couldn't make it uneven so I'm putting a Chevy engine in a Ford truck.

It's nothing too exciting. It was only rated at 230hp/385tq with the TBI. The only mods will be a Summit Stage 1 intake, Holley 750 and maybe a set of headers.

The only thing I have with less power than that is the Explorer. The Cobra and Chevelle are way above that and even my Suburban has more horsepower. It just has less torque.

One truck has a little four banger (120 hp) and the other only has a V6 (170 hp)

My first car was the Chevelle but when I bought it someone had removed the 396 and installed a 307. I don't how much horsepower it had but it only lasted a year before my dad and I yanked it and installed a 1969 396 out of an Impala.

I'd already cleaned 90% of it before she came out to help me, I wish I would have taken a picture before I started. I was still impressed that she didn't care.
I worked on it for about 6 hours today. I finished polishing the dash and started on the instrument cluster.

Gas tank behind the seat, awesome idea back in the day :uh:

It also has two auxiliary tanks in the bed just in front of each wheel well. I'm not going to use the in cab tank but I'm going to keep the two bed tanks to use. The main tank is going to be mounted under the bed in the back. I've read that a 70's Mustang tank fits there but haven't looked into yet. I'm going to build a speaker box in the area where the in cab tank was with a couple 10's and maybe some storage.

It had three separate gas tanks? Was it used on bombing missions?

Her grandfather added the extra tanks because he had a camper shell on it and used it for traveling.
Another cool thing is that while cleaning it out we found the original service policy from the day he purchased it which was 1/17/64 in Glendale, CA along with the original operators manual. The ink on the service policy is too faded for me to read what the dealership name was though.

I've been doing a lot of sanding lately. I don't have the money to have the paint/body work done right now so I'm just taking the rusted sections down to bare metal, spraying them with an etching primer and then with gloss white Rustoleum. The rest I'm just roughing up the paint and spraying over it. Here is what I've done so far.

You can follow up with regular primer after the etching primer. I would even use white, this way you wont spend twice as much in sandpaper getting the rustoleom off when it comes time for paint.

This weekend I finished pulling the engine on the Cobra and disassembled it and then pulled the engine and trans out of the F100. Next I'm going to clean up the engine bay and paint it black. Once that's done it'll will be time to measure for the BBC and make motor mounts.

I sanded the roof today and spent a lot of time cleaning up the rust in the drip rail. After getting as much out as I could I sprayed it with some rust encapsulator that I ordered from Eastwood. Once that dried I painted the roof. Next up will be the rest of the cab and then I'll move on to the doors.
