View Full Version : So it turns out I did blow a HG...

Not only was my heater hose spraying coolant on my headers yesterday, so was my leaky head gasket. I fixed the hose and as I try to turn the car over (it doesn't like to start) it's still leaking. What are the odds of that?
It's leaking from a weird spot too, behind the head, and normally a HG will leak coolant into the cylinder, not onto the block. I'm worried that the coolant spraying everywhere put a crack in the head or the block. Gay. Although, you would think 180 degree coolant wouldnt be cold enough to change the temp drastically.
Not to mention, I found out what that squeaking suspension noise was... I lost a control arm bushing!!! Since the DC trip I've been driving around with only one lower control arm bushing & bolt!!! How they hell am I going to replace just the one?
F*ck me.:barf:

Well, we don't know the temp of the coolant when it sprayed the heads/block. We do know that steam forms with a minimum temp of 212F. The differential could have been plenty to cause a sudden shock to the material(s), especially between the heads and block since they are different materials (you have Al. heads & Irong Block right)?
I think you might want to consider pulling the engine and thoroughly magnafluxing. Some things can be repaired with welding if caught early enough.

On the plus side Energy is going to ship me a bushing for free, 2 year warranty. The guy was real cool about it too.
And I'm not going to pull the engine if I don't have to. I'll see what's up first. If I did end up having to pull the engine, that would be the end of Cambria as a beast basically. I would put the stock engine back in, sell the car and start fresh with a 1st gen Camaro.

So it looks like both head are leaking! How in the hell could that happen?! And so far it looks like it's not a combustion chamber leak. I'm trippin out here.

Do you think you ever overheated and warped the heads?

No.
If the cylinders are holding pressure, I might just put some bars stop leak in there. If it's just the head gasket water passage leaking that should work, but then again I wouldn't be able to see if the block was cracked without taking the head off. Gay. Gay. I'm done with it for today...

You probably don't want to hear this right now, but you should take your time and be thorough, or it's only a matter of time until some tangentially related issue pops up soon after you "fix" it.

Yeah, I know... I have a bad feeling this could be the end for Cambria.

Still on the First gen Camaro kick? The Second Gen is a MUCH better built vehicle with a MUCH better sub-frame.:sm_up_there:

I've been on the Camaro kick for several years now. It was always the plan, just haven't yet had the balls to pull the trigger.
It's about aesthetics for me. I love the look of the first gen. Besides, any first gen that I would buy would have been caged and tubbed out already, so I wouldn't worry about torsional rigidity.

What's the weight difference between your current car, and a 1st gen Camaro?

Not sure, but the one's I've been looking at have all been around 2500lbs. My car now prob weighs 3000lbs, it's 3400lbs stock.

Sorry to hear of the blown gaskets. What head gasket do you have? Seems weird, but the Camaro used to be a stepping stone up to a 'Vette. Now it's the other way around.

You worry me. You want to get rid of the Vette for a Camaro. A First Gen to boot. Well, It's your life.:judge:
Hell, some people have (after mucho bucks) been able to get the first Gens to turn. But if you're only going in a straight line you should be ok.:sm_up_there:
If you do get a first Gen. I'll be here to help. Gots all kinds of up grade parts here.

I was running the ones AFR recommended, cheap crush ring Fel Pros, #1003. I'm thinking about using their MLS gaskets next time around, or maybe Cometic gaskets. With copper spray this time. I'm also thinking about taking my 9.4:1 down to 9:1.
Any advice?

I read something kind of funny on dezertrangers.com the other day. A bunch of guys were teasing this kid for rolling his ranger, he writes back and says "It's not my fault.... I wasn't expecting my cock to shift in my pants that suddenly" Thought that was clever.

Honestly, I prefer the drivability and reliability of something like I have now as opposed to that.

Hey, look what I run--it's dependable as Hell.:rolling:
I've been thinking ( oh shit ) that I might build the 377 as a supercharged (your way) Dual Quad.

I can see that. I prefer to drive around my gas sipping Neon and have a fun loud not practical gas sucker that I can take out on the weekends.
Flipping the gas bill for a thirsty monster motor on a daily basis sucks the fun out of it for me. And frankly, 400hp won't cut it anymore. I am now and forever spoiled. Now that I have a DD with AC :) I can go a little more crazy with my next project.
And the point of posting that Camaro wasn't so much for the blown BBC, but more the style of the car. The stance, the color, the wheels. My Camaro would definitely have a hood. :sm_laughing:

I think AFR is wrong. I am using Fel-Pro's MLS black gaskets. They have held 16 lbs. boost for a while now. Pay attention to the head and block surface finish. It gets critical with boost.

Do you remember the part number of your MLS? I might just run the same one if it will work.
Is there anything that I should do special to prep the surface? I normally just go over it with a metal paint scraper and then use a scotch brite pad until it's clean enough to eat off of. And do you use the copper spray??

Wise choice. You probably should have someone ride along to read it as you make successive approaches to WOT.

I have an LM-1 also...like it a lot but need to log boost as well as fuel pressure. Time to break out the soldering iron again....:bang:

If the AF ratio is good, isn't that all that matters?
