I like to pretend to cook sometimes. I'm pretty good at watching tv though, and overall my favorite cooking show was Alton Brown's "Good Eats." What I like about it is the combination of food science, culinary history, humor, home doable (not ultra-gourmet) techniques, and his build-a-tool mentality.

Tivo it if you like cooking and don't know the show.

This one's for Shaolin "Jerky Master" Crane.

Another great one was the original "Iron Chef" from Japan, not the Food Network knock off. I especially like the part where the losing chef is boiled alive in the tears of their own shame at the end.

Ok. I added that part.

I can practically see Sean making a face at the very thought of sea food.

OTOH, there's Julia Child. Guy, this is what you're missing by not drinking. As far as cooking tv shows go, this is Genesis.

Vanessa loves cup cake wars, i through no relation of name, love the Guy Fieri cooking shows. Another one i love that is only on the japanese channel at night is called "Dotchi" they give a different background to the cooking. It involves going back past how the ingrediants are made. Similar to how kobe beef is made they will show these special cows that are raised for milk only, are taxied around the farm and massaged hourly, stuff like that.

Ben i'm not missing anything by drinking but i do love some fuckin jerkey, nothing like going to the store are seeing prime sirloin on sale and buying several pounds to make jerkey at home. Normal when we make it a few pounds are made and i'll polish it off it one night. Damn you fucker now i gotta go to the store and get jerkey making goods.

. . .

There was another Japanese show I forget the name of that was more like a kind of competition to see who could cook what for the least amount of money and they accounted for EVERYTHING, like gas and electricity AIR. Some of these people, and they were mostly personalities of one type or another were making some pretty amazing things for absolute peanuts in cost. That's one of the things I like about cooking and wished I had a little more time to get into it. You can live well enjoying healthy meals for very low price once you develop a base of techniques.

Sure, ive mentioned in my other thread that im able to feed both vanessa and myself with extremely healthy meals for about $17-$24 a week (minus date night of course) sticking to natural ingredients like vinegar, garlic, onions, peppers, etc and staying away from stuff like butter, milk, etc etc makes fantastic meals that are quite healthy for cheap, and last for a few days. Something i'd like to do (which i use to just dont have the patience for) is using the fresh grown stuff.

I'd even throw out the offer to prepare a dinner using the stuff you grow yourself Ben. Either my place or yours.

Actually I hate shows where everything is made into a competition...

"One of you will go on to fame and glory, or at least a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni while the other will leave in shame and despair, find which one after this!!!"

Ugh.

See that was what I loved about the older cooking shows and even the new ones that like, show you how to do stuff. All those other false drama-fests on TV that are dramatizing everything we do in order to keep you glued to the set waiting to see what tragedy befalls the main character next!

Fuck those guys, getting paid six figures to be total fuck ups on camera while if you pulled that shit in the real world you would be paying for what you fucked up and looking for a new job.

Not everything in life is 'dramatic' people, get over it.

And stop giving the Kardashians and the morons from Jersey Shore any more money.

You know what reality show I would watch?

One where all these fools are stripped of every nickel and have to make it in real life for like five years and at the end, they can have the shitty life they made themselves without help of producers, famous parents or train wrecks.

My favorite show i watched on a Japanese channel translated "The Pursuit". The hosts traveled all over Japan to visit small family owned restaurants that specialized in one thing. My two favorites was about a teriyaki restaurant whose sauce base was 500 years old and has been passed down generation to generation and the other served a thick sliced sweet potato tempura which had a special technique in preparing and cooking so the sweet potato was cooked, but not greasy or mushy.
I liked the Japanese Iron Chef too.
Food Network, I liked good eats, Alton Brown is great and I liked to watch Everyday Italian, but I will admit my main reason I was crushing on Giada De Laurentiis. I also watch Throwdown so I can watch Bobby Flay get owned. I like Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

I began recording good eats with season one, episode one. I believe I actually own them all on DVD at this point. I generally find cooking shows dull, despite the fact that I very much enjoy cooking, and consider myself to be quite good at it. But something about Good Eats really entertains me, must be my inner scientist/immature child that AB plays on so well.

Why heck, I can supply you with food and ammunition. ;)

I'm in transition from summer to fall/winter now. What kinds of things are you particularly interested in as ingredient(s) and I'll take a crack at it. We're lucky to live in SoCal, where there are a lot of options.

All I got at the moment is the tail end of some summer squash. [EDIT] Tomatillo coming on, Jalapenos around, some basil and lavender, maybe a touch of oregano and some mint, and more Rosemary than you can shake a stick at (you can't hardly kill that stuff). Lemons in a month or so.

I'm a little late to planting, but here's at least what's going in.

beets
cabbage
broccoli
lettuce (mostly for rabbits)
salad greens mix
daikon
carrots
tahitian squash (best squash ever!)
kabocha (winter type squash - planted but struggling)
tree collards

But it's going to be a couple months at least until any are ready for harvest.

Hmmm how about a filet mignon roast, tomatillo/jalapeno sauce with garlic toast points, and maybe a frozen sorbet for a finisher.
You supply the kitchen, spices and coors light(for the cookin, just trust me)
I'll supply the filet, fruit, garlic and culinary entertainment that is sensei

Do you have a bbq with a rotisserie? If not we can do an oven baked roast

I might of missed the location bit. Can I come to you? My wife is private . . like NSA no record of existence level private. This is a Vettezuki visits Shaolin Crane (and whomever operation). Maybe there's a 3rd party interested in providing location??

Technical questions.

- How many Tomatillos and Jalapenos do you think you need?
- Which spices?
- Coors Light? I have a colleague who home brews a variety. I can make a request. Since it's not the alcohol, but the flavors, Coors light doesn't ring any bells for me other than "drinking games." But I certainly defer to your experience.

Could we have something like a sweet potato based option to the garlic toast for carbs? I'm going paleo with food. No biggie.

Presently I do not have a BBQ/Grill.

I might bring a bottle of Red or same beer used in cooking? (unless you have a strict no booze rule) and you can enjoy the entertainment that is Vettezuki after a glass of wine . . . a bottle is made out of glass right?

How's a Friday?

We'll figure something out.

im the same way with my home, so i understand completely how she is, as i can count on one hand how many people ive brought into my home.

I'd probably need a dozen tomatillos and a healthy amount basil, rosemary, oregano, onions, since it'll likely be a 5-7lb roast.

Here is my reasoning about the coors light/corona. Ive tried many different types of alcohol with my filet and tri-tip recipes, most red wine and heavier flavored octane stuff pulls out a negative flavor from the meat, i cant explain it, it just does. Coors light and corona both have a lighter flavor and bring out the subtle flavors in the filet along with not overpowering the added spices.

Im all for trying to find low carb replacements but the sweet potatoe will have an odd flavor with the garlic and tomatillo. I use a small baggette and lightly smear it with a sea salt and garlic paste i'll make and is normally bbq'ed but i guess a toaster or oven will work.

I have no issue with other people drinking, i myself have never touched it and never will, but if everyone else wants to get shit faced plastered then hell, i'll bring the sharpies :smack:

It's a hypothetical. If some person P has BBQ w/Rotiseerie B, P could bring B to location X. If you showed up to location X at the same time, you could use B. You and P need not be the same person.
