This event has been turned into an unofficial Motorgen cruise. We will repeat in November. However, a few guys still want to meet and run this month. As for the precise route you take, I leave it up to you guys when you meet. Maybe change to run back to La Canada instead of out to Ontario. Whatever meets your preference. Sorry for any disappointment.

So if the map comes up as seen on Google, what do you guys think of this run?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/littletrun109.jpg

We start in Sunland and run Little T to Sand Canyon over to Soledad for a little parade cruising then over to Angeles Forest down to Angeles Crest and then into La Canada

OR!

The other way around even...

I took the liberty of cleaning it up best I could so we can keep the the number of directions pages to less than a full one.

:smack:

Halfway over Little T is a LARGE area to turn out and hang for awhile and it isn't a fee area. Where Sand Canyon hits Soledad there is a Denny's and an In-N-Out and gas and you know, stuff. I am not explicitly familiar with Soledad or the top of Angeles Forest but it should be nice. There are several large turnouts as we get down onto Angeles Crest but keep in mind it is a fee area however since we won't be 'recreating' we don't have to shell out the $5 unless you want to.

Three right turns...

Also be down for a straight ACH run but instead of going down 138 to the 15 we use Lone Pine Canyon Road.

Look it up, it's in Wrightwood.

So like, anyone wanna throw down a time?

There is a 7-11 at Osbourne and Lexicon with a parking lot you can jam a few cars into as well as street parking. Osbourne becomes Little T about a block north of the store so that is a good place to start.

Wanna eat at In-N-Out or does anyone know someplace that'll deal with a crowd up in Acton or what?

Anyplace near the end of the run on the other end?

Ever heard of Rocky Cola Cafe in Montrose? I never been to that one but I have been into the one here in uptown Whittier and it's not bad. Not sure if it's still the same owners or not.

There's nothing really in Acton. There's a AMPM on one side, there's another gas station jack in the box and McDonald's on the other side. Neither have very big parking. Maybe the McDonald's.

Newcomb Ranch is always a good place to stop for food on ACH on the way back down to La Canada.

Small White Car
09-22-2011, 11:01 PM
Newcombs has eight dollar tuna melts and three dollar Cokes.

For half that money I'll drive up to Mt Wilson and have a burger at the Cosmic Cafe and a really cool view.

The road to the observatory is tight and usually very dirty but there is a HUUUUUGE parking lot on top where you park under these...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/postrapturerun012.jpg

Small White Car
09-23-2011, 11:08 AM
Okay well a little R&D (better three weeks prior than three days this time, eh?), a few things...

First off we need to shoot for a shorter time between roll in and departure, the 7-11 is like the only business in the middle of a residential neighborhood so we'll need to meet, greet and beat feet. Courtesy to the neighbors is priority one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/startpoint109.jpg

Up Little T at Santa Clara Truck Trail is the aforementioned area where we can turn off and park on level clean ground and hang out for a little while if we would like to group up and say hello.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/turkeyrun014-tiltshift2.jpg

I think we'll have room as this is about half the available space IF we want to stop and hang, mind you this is early into the run, about ten miles from the 7-11. (Please pardon the foo-foo camera trickery)

Second I did some aerial recon of the Rocky Cola and there is like no parking adjacent, much like the one local to me. There is a huge city lot about a half a block away from the back of the restaurant and a dozen eateries between the two.

There are a million restaurants in the area if one wants to find one with adequate accommodations for a group, personally the thought of going on up to Mt. Wilson for a nosh and some hang time is highly appealing however I'm not sure who wants another twisty road at the end of an eighty mile drive. Although last I was there, room for a hundred or so cars and it's not too far from the end of the run...

Third and most important (to me anyway) is that while I will always more than happily toss out a run for the group, I don't wanna lead and to be quite honest I'm sure most of you horsepower junkies would prefer I don't. So work it out amongst yourselves who is gonna forge ahead, I prefer the rear parts of the pack myself. It always helps to have someone sweeping up to know where the hell to go too.

I'm up for a run, straight ACH is fine, GMR to Baldy or someone throw down an O.C. route?

We can play around with the earlier run in this thread too.

I can toss out a different one all together, feel like going from Redlands to Glendale via Crestline and Wrightwood?

Come on, I can't be the only one out there who knows the roads.

Howsaboot Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest (Nine Mile is closed) to Angeles Crest, up to Mt. Wilson or out to Grassy Hollow or Wrightwood proper and back to Glendale? It's a whole other road in the other direction.

Toss somethin' down!

SMC,

Consider this (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=635+Foothill+Boulevard,+La+Canada+Flintridg e,+CA+91011&hl=en&ll=34.202296,-118.192702&spn=0.002497,0.002411&sll=34.151014,-118.052624&sspn=0.007067,0.009645&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=19)as a possible starting point. If there's a better spot I'm open, but it needs to accomdate a potential of 50+ cars for up to an hour max.

Make Mt. Wilson the mid point.

End somewhere where we can eat.

I'm thinking meet 10:00am, leave 11:00am. Lunch early afternoon at end point.

End somewhere where we can eat.

I'm thinking meet 10:00am, leave 11:00am. Lunch early afternoon at end point.

The last time we went there, the main parking lot was way too busy. How about the back lot, here?
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=34.203109,+-118.193150&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=6&sll=34.202539,-118.192897&sspn=0.002918,0.002784&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=34.203737,-118.192908&spn=0.002918,0.002784&z=18&iwloc=A

Large, non-busy parking, with right-handed turns onto the cruise (vs. left-turns) is important if you want to keep the group together as much as possible.

This was my idea last time as well but by the time people started showing up it was too much trouble to move everyone. This is a much better place to meet and to be blunt, I want to park next to & associate with like-minded people; not Mom with the kids in their Mini-Van. Here’s a photo of what it looked like last time. The lot is directly behind T.J. Maxx, is more that large enough, and the run-out to Foothill Blvd. is easier to negotiate. Just my two cents.

So run from the back parking lot of the Von's we met at in June. We can head up Angeles Crest Highway to Mt. Wilson Redbox Rd.

Mt. Wilson Observatory - Red Box Canyon Road - September 2010 - YouTube

No haters, it isn't me and it isn't my car, just a random YouTube video of the road. It looks surprisingly clean there, doesn't always happen, line changing boulders are the norm all through the forest and here is no exception.

The space on top is large and open.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/postrapturerun017.jpg

However I can't guarantee we'll be the only folks up there.

If we would like to do the same run as last time plus the trip up to Mt. Wilson we can swing up that way first. If you want to drive out to Wrightwood and back, we could hit it on the way back.

The group you see in the pictures is the biggest group I've ever run up the mountain, it's a dead end at the top and the road splits into two one way streets going around the towers and as you see in the video the road is small and tight but on a clear day you can see the back of your own head from up there.

:toocool:

Anyway it looks like the general consensus is the Von's, out back at 10am and I will be there. Just looking to throw out my $.02 about Mt. Wilson.

Why is there even a "don't care" option?

If there are only a set of discreet options, and no "Don't care", the people who "Don't care" probably won't vote. In a case where the number of votes for an option are small, like 2 to 1 or something, knowing that a bunch of people "Don't care" can be useful in being confident about going for the the simple majority.

Night cruises have their own challenges, especially up the crest where there are tons of fallen rocks, big and small. We had a fair bit of challenge dodging them on a clear sunny day with little glare, let alone at night with headlights from on-coming traffic. I have driven the Crest at night and unless there is no one in front of you it is very difficult to see rocks in time to react.

I wish you well, and to have fun with a night cruise, but I most likely will not be participating.

Little Tujunga is a much better road for night runs, little traffic, clean road. Keep on up Sand Canyon to Lake Elizabeth and then to Gorman.

I know, it's like driving to the moon for most of you but it is much less stressful than the Crest.

Of course we're assuming the pace will be similar to the one today...

What time are you planning on making the run Ben? I could see a lot more people going for a 6:30-7:00 departure time to see the sun set on the drive than say a midnight cruise.

That's what I was thinking roughly. The idea is cruise during sun setting to some view point, city lights after sun set. Cruise under some moon light (though it will be lower in the sky at that time) to some decent grub place.

See the following link for the November cruise. Let's settle this within the week so it can be properly promoted. It's been months since we've had a big turn out (50+). No excuses this time.

Two video clips of the less-than-spirited portions: 10/09/2011 Angeles Crest cruise - YouTube

While we were eating lunch at the cafe up there, two Lamborghinis (one Superleggera, and one Gallardo) and a 418 LS3 CTS-V showed up too. The CTS-V guy had heard about our group and said he had thought about joining us, but went to another event with his friends w/the Lamborghinis.

Less than spirited?

I'm tiny! I got a 1.6 with no goodies!

By the way, you can't tell from the video but we were averaging about 65mph also it looks like I'm lagging behind The Atom, that is not the case, the thing has no fenders and I was getting pelted with a steady shower of pine needles and gravel if I got too close.

Have I made enough excuses?

:p

Sure. LOL. My tires only made brief happy noises a couple of times yesterday. It was a nice, safe, fun pace.

My tires made death cries. Surprised you didn't get any footage of my tail kicking out
