Step right up ladies and gentlemen, please turn your attention to the main stage where the Motorgen crowd will dazzle us with their feats of skill, acts of bravery and ability to stretch tales to their tallest!!!

:smack:

Okay well, I guess this one is mine to throw down thanks to our glorious leader and a man named Utah...

Now I'm not sure when you all want to get together and make this happen, I'm good for just about anytime since my schedule usually dictates a yea or a nay for the entire day so it doesn't matter too much to me.

However...

The Supercar Sunday show at the The Promenade at Woodland Hills (6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd) is on Sunday morning between about 7am and 10:30am and it's usually my reason for driving all the way to friggin' Ventura to go drive, really I prefer ACH and now that it's open again I can go there in half the time. But if'n y'all are in favor of an afternoon run, that's fine as well although a good portion of the roads are in shadow by then. I really dig standing on Piuma looking over Malibu on one side with the valley on the other as the marine layer rolls back out to sea uncovering the south bay and on a good day all the way to the islands.

But I digress...

The Route (http://g.co/maps/rcwq)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/routemap1.jpg
I've come back to the link only to have Google decide it wants to go a different way so here is what it is supposed to look like...

*let's avoid the confusion*

The Stunt/Schueren/Piuma bit is a photo-op road, these are nice smooth roads with good curves and enough ups and downs to make the driver smile and keep the wife from vomiting in your lap. Near the head of The Snake you'll find Paul from Rock Store Photos (http://www.rockstorephotos.com) set up doing his thing, giving us all the opportunity for a poster shot if it turns out good. I purposely planned this part on the trip so he can shoot the drivers side of the car as we go by. Smart thinkin' huh?

Now as we all know I have rather questionable taste in food and even more questionable taste in establishments, so I will ask if anyone knows someplace in the area of the trip that they wouldn't have a problem taking their mom to, please speak up. I can't say I have been to a sit down restaurant that didn't have pictures of the food on the menu in quite some time, unsophisticated barbarian that I am.

So then, help a brotha' out.

I still need a time and a restaurant, the route I got down. (Although I have passed on a couple ideas to jefe)

Well there is a Sandwich and Salad place inside the same mall as the take off place that has a good Yelp rating (FWIW) and reasonable prices. THe good news there is that parking shouldn't be a problem at least. There's an In N' Out not too far from there, but it looks like a disaster waiting to happen if several dozen cars roll up on it . . basically it just won't work.

Would be nice to get something with a little more character though.

. . . There is a point on the map where, if some of the smaller cars or more technical drivers would like, it is possible to use an alternate route to go from Mulholland to P.C.H. Latigo Canyon parallels Kanan Dume Road so perhaps we can figure out a regrouping point on P.C.H. near the terminus of both roads and us little guys can have some fun . . .

Honestly, it's challenging enough to get a larger group to attempt following one route. Throwing in alternates would be impossible to convey sensibly to people who just show up for the run (which happens a lot). Let's stick to the one true route.

well I saw a group of a few corvettes and camaros cruising PCH along side me a while back. Wouldnt you know they ended the cruise at KFC on PCH hahahaha.

Malibu Seafood is great :) but last time I went on a cruise that ended there we all had to park on the street. It made for great pictures though.

Well, two things...

First off, I don't think that particular Ruby's is there any longer, since the building that used to house Ruby's is now a parking lot.

Edit: Looks to me like they may have moved indoors.

And second, well, it would seem it's actually the correct meet spot and I put down the wrong mall as point A. Supercar Sunday is at the Westfield Promenade. It's about a half mile closer to the run and there is a restaurant or two there that might make everyone happy.

:bang:

So, yeah. Looks like I'm off to a flying one once again.

Sounds like a maybe for me depends on work, what if we skip Kanan and just do Latigo as a group, Latigo is tight but less cops and more fun

Because this way it would actually be backwards on Latigo. It is a much better run from P.C.H. to Kanan and much easier than trying to go from The Snake to Kanan to Latigo to P.C.H.

All lefts.

:yikes:

I just figured with a large group we may want to be on the southbound side (actually eastbound) of P.C.H. so we can see the ocean and not oncoming traffic.

My ass cheeks are eight inches from the pavement, the closer I am to the neat stuff the better chance I have of seeing it.

:jester:

The drive isn't spectacularly long and I know the slot car tracks so maybe after the main run we can break into small study groups and discuss the days events.

IF we were to meet in the morning, is there enough space at the Promenade to accommodate an additional 50 cars or so? I'm NOT a morning person and this isn't exactly in my neighborhood, but if we could combine the meetup with a cool car meet before rolling, that may be of some interest. This will require some update to the route.

I'll have to double check to make sure but usually not only is there room but you actually become part of the show.

The major meet here is the last Sunday of the month, that's when they have the marque meet but much like Cars and Coffee they do meet weekly.

I not sure how people got lost, the stop sign turns sort of broke up the group, but we seem to all be together on top of the snake, then some of the vettes in front of me took off and went straight instead of turning on Kanan Dune Road, since it looked like no one followed me I decide to play and turned left on to Latigo Cyn down to PCH, fully expecting most of the cars to be in front of me, dis not see anyone. Drove all the way on PCH to Topanga Cyn, turned into the canyon, still no sightings of anybody, since again there was no one with me I detoured up Old Topanga, hoping for less traffic, drove out to the Westfield mall, thought I would see every one there, but instead all I found was a black Charger and a few minutes later the Honda 2000. We left a not, had lunch at Ruby's, came out to find a Miata parked next to us but I guess no one else made it back. I hope everybody had a good time at least, I had a blast, seeing Jay Leno and his 26' Bugatti was an added bonus.

Because you used destinations for each turn to create the route and I didn't have time to clean it up. Honestly though, the turns and distances were all there, it looked like a lot more than it was. But yes direction clean up is important. I'll keep the route and clean it up for next time. The area has lots of roads and turns so if you aren't used to it, it's probably a bit confusing.

Was about 20 minutes late and attempted to catch up with the group. In 3 hours of driving I never saw anyone else :lmfao:

Detoured from the route and had some fun on Corral Canyon Rd before doing Tuna Canyon. Parked next to the blue STI and charger at the mall and ate at Maggiano's (excellent by the way-they have a lunch deal where you order an entree and get to take a second one home for free.)

Can we please hit up Angeles Crest Highway next month before the winter hits it? That was probably the best/most organized cruise I've been on.

My dad and I actually made every correct turn. We had a great time and we did get video of Jay and his Bugatti. My dad got a little confused by the direction (the towards XX street totally screwed him up. I told him... Just look at the major turns in bold and ignore everything else. Had a blast. When we turned onto PCH a guy came next to me and said that a bunch of guys turned the other way (towards Neptunes). I hear that during the Stop with Jay and though that a bunch of people were doing it. It was just Jerry and his friends. Jerry... you jackhole (j/k)

Got split up from the group almost immediately (my fault)--I didn't even take notes on the directions. So, instead of desperately trying to find the group a few of us just went "playing" on the various roads in the area. It's a veritable playground up there, and we ended up running into a few other Motorgeners along the way anyway.

Downside: We didn't get to stick together

Upside: By not sticking together, I was free to drive at my own pace instead of being part of a mobile traffic jam "pack"

I suggest we do the Malibu area again, but next time just split the group into smaller subgroups (8-10 cars) according to skill/speed/comfort level/etc. each led by someone who's generally familiar with the area (I can lead a group). That way we can have mini-groups that'll be running at comfortable paces for the group, not overwhelm stop areas, and can be "managed" easier. The cool thing about doing it this way is that we'll constantly be seeing other Motorgen sub-groups drive past throughout the drive. Lots more social that way. It also generally keeps the stop areas (such as the overlook) from getting overwhelmed...there's not enough parking there for everyone anyway. This method doesn't require run maps, only simple caravan techniques (to ensure you don't leave people behind). That way we could have large numbers of Motorgeners showing up for the event without (or minimizing) the downsides of having large numbers of Motorgeners causing traffic (or getting split up, etc).

This technique wouldn't work all that well for an Angeles Crest run, but for a playground of roads that the Malibu area offers it's a perfect approach.

No turn offs, plenty of turn outs.

ACH goes pretty much straight through whereas Malibu has a hundred roads that look like driveways to go and play on with hidden street signs everywhere.

Missed out on Latigo yesterday, anyone hit it and how was it?

The split run groups is a great idea, we could have a start point, maybe a mid point stop and then an end point where we could gather at a predetermined place for a late lunch or whatever. The small run groups also have the advantage of everybody would be following a car that knows where it is going, most of us cannot read the directions while driving and end up just playing follow the car in front, if they are lost so are we.
One of the other advantages of this approach is it allows us to play on smaller roads, if we wish on Sundays when there maybe too much traffic on the more common easy to follow routes, I could lead a group as well if we play in my local mountains.

As to, Latigo Cyn, I drove down it yesterday to PCH and it was a whole bunch of fun and in good shape until about the 1/8 of the route from the bottom, the road gets a little rougher down there and more importantly I got stuck behind a large SUV, but other wise, highly recommended.

Had fun but ya, the directions were very confusing. Me and Jon B in MX-5 got stuck at one of the lights on topanga cyn blvd so were kinda left behind and had nobody to follow. I had a map and he had the last page of the map so I had to lead. We get to muholland and I see stunt road on the map but it doesnt say turn onto stunt road or anything, seemed like it skipped a bunch of steps. So me and Jon B make it to Tuna Cyn and take topanga back to the mall. Nobody is there so Jon B gets on the phone with someone and they tell us they are at the snake. So we start heading up that way and on the way up we see the atom and SWC. We go hit Tuna again and then go back to the mall.

I think the number one most confusing thing was that on certain streets there was no sign, like at the top of stunt. In the future I will print myself a map with the route cuz to me thats much easier than looking at streets and distances. Also, if we are doing a cruise then there should always be a regroup stop before we get to the intresting part of the cruise. I would be intrested in putting together the Oct 9 cruise if you guys want. I put together a cruise in the same area about a year ago with about 15-20 cars. No maps and nobody got lost.

Yeah, Karn in the silver C5 Vette and all his friends (black BMW, GT-R, "El Shamu" C6, etc.) and then the blue C5 Vette, black Camaro, and silver Firebird (me) went to Neptunes for some food. After that, we hit up Decker and a couple other canyon runs (which is where I got the footage I posted a few posts back).

We also got to see an OLD biker guy throw a temper tantrum because his wife didn't save him a seat at Neptunes. LOL.

Good points. Duly noted. It's my fault for not cleaning up the directions, I just printed straight from Google and it throws in a lot of not so necessary information.

This is why ACH (and GMR/GRR) are good cruises. Once you're on the road, you literally can't get off route. The Mulholland area has been the most challenging to do sucessfully (both cruises have been a little but . . dynamic let's say) because of the million options. We've pulled off 60+ cars meeting and running ACH with no problems. Even the small group can get mixed up in Malibu.

There is an interesting one of me coming down The Snake that I might have to shell out a couple of bucks for.

I was thinking of hitting Old Topanga back to Mulholland but I was hungry so I just kept over the hill AT 27 MPH! thanks to some asshole who decided it was his day to police the road, he wasn't too happy with the guy following him trying to push him down the road.

I'da liked to push them both over the side of the road.

The worst that I ever got stuck behind was up the crest. On the way down I caught a F-150 that was going 10 under the limit that refused to get out of the way. My personal rule is to give the guy 5 chances to use LARGE turnouts. After that I give him a few flashes of the lights, then a "warm my tires weave". About 15 turnouts later we got to a passing lane and the guy actively blocked me swerving in front of me each time I tried to pass. I ended up just pulling off into a turnout and waiting about 10 minute so that I could safely drive the speed limit. The crazy part was that I hadn't been speeding, tailgating, or anything else that would have provoked his blocking. Heck most of that day I had been getting out of other people's way since I had my mother in the car who can't stand twisty roads.

I had a similar issue ACH except it was a BMW, he must have passed 100 turnouts and refused to pull over, I finally just turned right down Angeles Forest Hwy to get rid of him

I would tend to agree, but I didn't have any intention of coming up on a guy going 15-20mph faster than him when I feel like there is a good chance that he would just jump in front of me at the last second causing an accident. Plus in F150 vs. Lowered Miata, Miata loses every time.
