Cross over from political, but mark my words, two things are coming soon barring major resistance
- All new cars will have federally mandated vehicle data recorders, and eventually retrofit
- A mileage tax will supplant the gasoline tax

And with transponders to track your mileage....they will be able to track your speed.

Data recorders, probably. Retrofit, no.
Mileage tax, maybe, but I'd bet you $10 that it doesn't happen in the next 10 years.

Sounds like the newest vehicle I'll ever buy is the year before those little boxes happen, or find a way to rip it out like every other similar device they have now.

Retrofit is arguable, though I'd lean towards it in the longer run. Remember when Diesels didn't have to go to smog. Now they do. Rolling exemptions were eliminated, back standards are increased. Money is given to "help" people make their cars less polluting. These are emissions things, but rules change all the time. No fundamental reason there wouldn't be a program to retrofit data recorders as long as they were paid for by the government. Sort of how HDTV decoder boxes were paid for. Here's the new standard, here's what you need.
Your on for $10 for mileage tax in less than ten years. I think that's a slam dunk barring major public outcry.

Diesel smog btw is the biggest load of horseshit ever, its a 100% SUBJECTIVE test that requires no sniffer or electrical reading

It's just a pretense for money. My brother after more than a decade in the service industry up at a fairly high level has to now take a state "test" to make sure he knows what he's doing. Uh, that's the employers job. The test of course costs money money to the state.

Bullshit.
The guy that did mine was an idiot he got up on the tire and was looking through with a flash light. He didn't know what the fu*k he was looking for, he just was looking and asking dumb questions.
