Back by popular demand.
Same time schedule as last time, only this time we'll send a spotter car up first to make sure the fuzz isn't busting people for no front plate. IF YOU HAVE A WALKIE TALKIE, BRING IT SO WE CAN COMMUNICATE AND HALF THE GROUP DOESN'T THINK THE ROAD IS CLOSED!
Here is the schedule:
The plan is to meet up at Vons in La Canada at 11:45a.m. The address is:
635 W Foothill Blvd
La Canada, CA 91011
We'll leave the lot at 12:30p.m.
Here is the new route. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=635+W+Foothill+Blvd+La+Canada,+CA+91011&daddr=CA-2+E%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:4423+East+Mills+Circle+ Ontario,+CA+91764&geocode=FZXgCQIdX4f0-ClXl7BECMLCgDG_f5fKGME6lg%3BFZSUDAIdCi78-A%3BFR74BwIdaD3--CmpbSjngzXDgDGemKSs50j4iw&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.214073,-117.864075&sspn=0.625728,1.352692&ie=UTF8&ll=34.207259,-117.894287&spn=0.625778,1.352692&t=h&z=10)
After the drive we're heading to Fuddruckers at Ontario Mills for lunch. We should arrive between 3:00p.m. and 3:30p.m.
The road is freshly paved and the drive is incredible:

So?
Put a front plate on and join the parade.
Eight of us went up a couple weeks ago and had no problems with anyone, it was nice.
You gonna get up in numbers you'll likely have issues, run six-eight cars at a time and meet someplace on the other side.

It's open! It's all open, every piece of road, I spent yesterday killing a tank of gas up there. I started in La Canada went to Wrightwood, then to Tajunga and ended up back in La Canada. Awesomeness! There are two temporary signals in use up on the crest, one where the mountain seems to be halfway on the road, and the other where the road seems to be halfway down the mountain, these two spots are down to one lane. I did see two CHP motorcycles up on the crest, one at the end of a very long straightaway, the other about a mile before(west) of the tunnels. Both times I was warned by a motorcycle rider going the other way. But the E55 in front of must not have known what it meant when the rider patted the top of his helmet, he floored it down the straight and got to have a meeting with the CHP officer. As far as road conditions, the new front side is smooth as a babys butt, stays that way on to the crest. After a while it goes back the the old pavement, but is still very clean. After passing Mt. Waterman I started seeing some road debris (rocks) not a lot of them but a few big ones, at one point I needed to be mostly in the other lane to avoid them. But these are all the charms of driving in the mountains, I had a great day and hope you guys and gals do too. Don't think I will be able to join you on the 12th.

Since there is 7 pages on this.
Is this correct.
Meeting at Vons in LaCanada noon
ending up at fuddruckers, ontario mills mall.
You probably know this already but exiting the 15 at Cleghorn rd (just south of 138) is a stretch of old 66. road is in good shape and would make a good pic stop. You return to the 15 before the 15/215 split.

I'd say aggressive driving up there this weekend is out of the question unless someone wants to just slowly cruise it. Itll be a waste and too risky if youre a canyon carver. If they were giving chicken $hit tickets for front plates be assured theyll find anything to detour "performance cars" from hitting the twisties.

Well guys, it was swell, had an enjoyable time with you all right up until we bugged out.
These tiny little cars can't help it, they just gotta go. After the rest of the Miatas found the 15 I doubled back up Lone Pine Canyon Rd, stopped and had lunch with a couple of sheriffs on dual sports at Jensen's and then ran all the way back to La Canada (with a five minute potty stop at Chilao) pretty much all by myself. The only excitement I had was coming up on an STi in the ditch, better than down the cliff, and one of those lights at the one lane section malfunctioned so both ends were red and green at the same time. Fun fun fun. I think I spotted the crowd at one point before I got back to Lone Pine Canyon @ 138, that or there was a whole group of Evo's running around out there too.
Let's do it again sometime!

Hey guys, I just registered to let ya know we made it out ok. Just had to wait for the RX7 FC to cool down and we were back on track.
I took some footage from the first 20mins out and will be back to post once I upload it.
Thanks again for coming back to make sure everything was ok.
FisaFisa, I had no idea it was you that had “broken down.” I was up front without a radio (forgot to bring it) and at the break stop learned someone had over-heated, or something. It’s rare that we ever leave anyone behind. Leedom is a good guy and I’m glad he went back to check on things. Also glad you’re okay and made it out fine.

Yes thank you guys! Good gtg as usual, I found everyone/everything mellow and enjoyable. Look forward to doing it again.
I also thank you guys for posting on the other car forums, as without this I would have never know the existence of Motorgen.

I still had fun without you. I was in back of the first group of Evos and Subarus. They couldn't shake me in the straight aways or the turns. It helped big time that I crammed the 225/45/17s for more grip. I had to roll the fender lips to fit them.

nope
I was pushing pretty hard up in the front after the break with 2 other miatas and was quickly reminded of why 17" ghetto rims and Kuhmo Ecsta Supras aren't the best for canyon roads. Thank god for my Torsen and 6-point rollbar though :jester:

I had a great time today:nuts: Got some great pics and videos. Just too wiped out to get them uploaded yet.
I put 321 miles on the old Camaro this weekend and she did awesome ! I hope the 40 year old Chevy leading didn't hold anybody back too much.
Not sure how effective the radios are. I heard a few transmissions and I sent a few out... 1 about the CHP motorcycle as we started up and another as we stopped at the turn out. I had it clipped to a chain I wear and it dropped off and ended up on the floor.

Standard radios don't work so hot up there. There are some cool apps for smart phone that emulate 2-way, but I don't recall that being great either.

Why, blue, of course...
For the radio guys, they just don't work, that's why there is a somewhat uniform code of hand signals that folks should learn, at least the basics.
For trailing cars:
'Point past' - hand out the window, index finger pointing down and forward, let's the bikes know you are aware of them and they can pass safely.
'Do not pass!' - Hand extended out window, palm facing rearward, let drivers coming up on you there is a hazard.
'Oh shit!' - Arm extended straight up with a slight waving motion, usually reserved for when you've broken down or need some other assistance.
Woo Hoo!!!! - Both hands extended straight up as you crest a hill on a beautiful sunny day, this signal is reserved for those of us in Roadsters!
Oncoming traffic:
'Watch out for cops ahead' - Is either a hand patting the top of your helmet or a hand out the window, palm down in a patting sort of motion.
'Accident ahead' is the same motion as cops but with much bigger eyes usually.
You can pass hand signals down the line pretty quickly since your job as a driver is to pay attention to the car in front and watch the car behind you and if it isn't there to let the guys in front of you know.
Was wondering where you went when you disappeared from my rearview in the beginning. Glad to hear it worked itself out!

Oh in the beginning I was filming. I pulled over to film people driving by and to get as many cars as I could. I go some good footage of the champagne colored Z28, the Maroon SS Cobalt and the Blue Z06, then the Z3 and a few miatas in front of him before my battery died :(
I had a great run with the other RX7, Grey MX-5, and the Black A4. I think we had about 5 good minutes of no obstructions up in that snow area. I wish my camera had caught it!

You have a 2011 subie, and don't have comprehensive? I have comp and glass coverage on my 96 miata... It only added like $50 a year, and now glass is free with no deductible. It already got me a 100% free top when my rear window split, and I am currently praying for a rock to crack the front window so that I can get a new one of those too.

Totally worth it. You will save $300 if the windshield costs $800. Tell the agent that something shot from the car in front of you that was "unavoidable" and they cover it and can not raise your rates.
I was on the way to the track a few years ago and something shot from the semi next to me and put a nice size gouge in my bumper and it was replaced under comprehensive and no rate increase.
luder_5555
06-14-2011, 12:11 AM
My agent told me that comp claims shouldn't raise your rate since they are not collision claims. Also, if you have comp already, you should look at glass coverage. For most companies it is a very small extra on top of comp coverage. (IIRC it was like $3-4 more per month) The reason that they do it that way, is glass coverage is essentially a deductible insurance on glass only...
