Time for our yearly Angeles Crest Cruise! This is the best cruise of the year, don't miss it!

The plan is to meet up at Vons in Tujunga at 11:45a.m. The address is:

7789 Foothill Blvd
Tujunga, CA 91042

We'll leave the lot at 12:30p.m.

ACH doesn't currently go all the way through because of this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/achdown2.jpg

Because of that, I'm changing the route to this (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=7789+Foothill+Blvd++Tujunga,+CA+91042&daddr=Big+Tujunga+Canyon+Rd%2FForest+Service+Rd+Fh 59+to:Angeles+Forest+Hwy%2FCo+Hwy+N3+to:Upper+Big+ Tujunga+Canyon+Rd+to:CA-2+E%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:CA-2+W%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:CA-2+W%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:CA-2+W%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:CA-2+W%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:Big+Tujunga+Canyon+Rd%2 FForest+Service+Rd+Fh59+to:7789+Foothill+Blvd++Tuj unga,+CA+91042&geocode=FS3ACgId9Njy-CkLwkWeVZPCgDEhSSi16VPjUA%3BFYxUCwId5v_0-A%3BFcLQCwIdLp31-A%3BFVz6CgId09T2-A%3BFfAkDAIdCh35-A%3BFWLwCgIdvJ_2-A%3BFfS9CgIdctv1-A%3BFU2-CgIdjdr1-A%3BFXDsCgIdRiH1-A%3BFahUCwId-v70-A%3BFS3ACgId9Njy-CkLwkWeVZPCgDEhSSi16VPjUA&hl=en&mra=pr&sll=34.28996,-118.097595&sspn=0.312583,0.676346&ie=UTF8&ll=34.290126,-118.097534&spn=0.312583,0.676346&t=h&z=11). Times will remain the same. See you all on Sunday!

We had over 60 cars at GMR last month, and I'm hoping to beat that for Angeles Crest. See you all on the 15th!

IS CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO 5 MI WEST OF BIG PINES (LOS ANGELES CO)
- FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

This wont ruin the cruise, but we may have to turn around and return the way we came. Has anyone driven this recently to know if it is closed or not?

This is the area im talking about.

Uh oh. Quoted from one of the guys at ClubRoadster.

"The road will not be open before this drive is gonna take place so pack a lunch or make other plans for food. There is a washout between Islip Saddle and Vincent's Gap, the entire westbound lane is at the bottom of the canyon."

Small White Car
05-01-2011, 03:44 PM
ACH will be closed when this drive is scheduled to occur, there is a washout before Islip Saddle, the westbound lane slid down the side. The damage is pretty extensive and is going to take some stabilization.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/achdown1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/Onederbuddy/achdown2.jpg

A word of warning, the forest day passes are voluntary, you don't need to buy them in order to park along side the roadway. The USFS issued 'tickets' are nothing more than begging for cash, they have no teeth if you don't pay them.

USFS law enforcement tickets however are enforceable and they like to write tickets for things like no front plates and other ticky-tac equipment violations.

I'm new, don't know if what I said is common knowledge or not around here but always good to share helpful information.

Sincerely,

SWC (one of the roadster guys from cr.net)

See you n the 15th!

So the entire ACH will be closed because of the washout?

The area of the closure right now is from Islip Saddle to Big Pines.

Small White Car
05-02-2011, 09:04 PM
No, the road is closed about 11 miles past Newcombs Ranch, just before the tunnels at Eagles Roost Picnic Area. This is actually a few miles before Islip Saddle. The closure from Islip Saddle to Big Pines is the yearly winter closure which is usually lifted around this time of year but with record snowfall over the winter they are talking about June.

You might want to consider a slight change in your route. When you get to Angeles Forest Highway make a right turn and take it to Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2) then then left up to Newcomb's Ranch. A few months back they chip sealed Upper Big Tujunga and it was dirty and rough.

Here is what it would look like. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=7789+Foothill+Boulevard,+CA+91042+(Vons)&daddr=Big+Tujunga+and+Angeles+Forest+Highway,+CA+t o:CA-2+E%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:4423+Mills+Circle,+Onta rio,+CA&geocode=FS3ACgId9Njy-CG3E83Q2-GOlykLwkWeVZPCgDEhSSi16VPjUA%3BFW1UCwId7gD1-Cm9KbG31e7CgDEg84nZwBjm0w%3BFZSUDAIdCi78-A%3BFR74BwIdaD3--CmpbSjngzXDgDGemKSs50j4iw&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.288141,-118.087921&sspn=0.462078,0.281181&ie=UTF8&ll=34.241324,-118.081741&spn=0.462335,0.281181&t=h&z=12)

Also, as of today it is still closed to Wrightwood:

" IS CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO 5 MI WEST OF BIG PINES (LOS ANGELES CO)
- FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE "

There is a back way around this if you want to loop down Upper Big Tujunga back to Angeles Forest Highway, turn right, and then turn right again at Mt. Emma Rd..

Route would look like this. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=7789+Foothill+Boulevard,+CA+91042+(Vons)&daddr=Big+Tujunga+and+Angeles+Forest+Highway,+CA+t o:Newcomb's+Ranch+to:Angeles+Forest+Highway+and+Mt .+Emma+Rd.,+CA+to:CA-2+E%2FAngeles+Crest+Hwy+to:4423+Mills+Circle,+Onta rio,+CA&geocode=FS3ACgId9Njy-CG3E83Q2-GOlykLwkWeVZPCgDEhSSi16VPjUA%3BFW1UCwId7gD1-Cm9KbG31e7CgDEg84nZwBjm0w%3BFSbVCwIdvW73-CHtjP8N60R9zg%3BFTWcDQIdGuf1-CnDxxojcvrCgDGnm_j3ehsTFg%3BFZSUDAIdCi78-A%3BFR74BwIdaD3--CmpbSjngzXDgDGemKSs50j4iw&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.233377,-117.857208&sspn=1.849466,1.124725&ie=UTF8&ll=34.292396,-117.857208&spn=1.848169,1.124725&t=h&z=10)

Okay, one, Newcombs does not like large groups all at once, it cramps business unless EVERYONE eats or buys so there is that.

Two, trying to turn around a bunch of cars at the closure will be rather tricky, not that it can't be done, there is a camp ground there but it's still rather tricky.

Three, The trip down 138 is about as fun as watching rocks fuck.

Perfect...

:nutkick:

So last Saturday Small White Car was minding her own business out front under her favorite tree, tucked carefully behind my nurse neighbor(who works nights)s Ridgeline and the other neighbor who never goes anywhere's driveway, short of my garage it's the best spot in the hood. Well wouldn't you know some young lady decided it looked like a parking spot and tried to park there, unfortunately when she realized her error she smacked into Small White Car's nearly pristine butt, leaving some rather nasty scars in the paint and causing the bumper cover to shift.

Anyway, to make a long story even longer, her insurance company called me today and told me where to take SWC on Friday morning so the damage can be repaired.

I aint counting on having it back on Friday night...

It should be relatively empty and is a fantastic drive. We'll take it in as far as we can go and then turn around. I've been looking for local food places, but none of them are big enough to hold all of us. If anyone has suggestions for food in or around the Tujunga are with a large parking lot, please let me know.

As far as the weather is concerned, it looks like it's going to be nice with no rain in the forecast. See you all Sunday!

^ The road was not closed, and about 20 of us went on a very good drive. What happened is that there were about 4 CHP officers waiting at the Intersection where you can either go straight and it will take you up to Upper Big Tujunga, or go right and it will take you to ACH. They were giving no front plate tickets to everyone. Once about 10 cars had gotten stopped, everyone else behind panicked and took off. After everyone who was left either got their ticket, or got through, we contemplated going back down the hill to let everyone know that it was ok, but we just continued on as you guys were already gone.

After that incident, everything went fine, and it was a great drive.

There are good reasons not to be "afraid" of cops when you have not done anything wrong. I saw people getting pulled over and just continued up to where they were. Granted I was about 8th in line, so I had nowhere to go, but I knew that my car was legal, and knew that I had no reason to worry. I would guess that a good number of the people who turned back could have made it through hassle free.

I have found that assuming that a cop is going to be a dick has never benefited me, so I just assume that they are going to be fair based on what the laws say. (I am certain that others have had different experiences) Not one person got a ticket for anything more than front plate, and whether or not you agree with that law, everyone does know that it IS the law...

Anywho, this drive has only convinced me that living in WA is still better than CA... Except for all the people who complain about the rain...

It can be as simple as a sign that we can use to show the person behind us that we either need to turn around or keep going/safe to proceed. Mass text would not work but a simple jester can travel fairly quick to everyone that's following. Of course, if someone is too far back with unknown cars in between they would simply know that everything is cool if no one has gone back.

We've tried them up there before, and honestly the range is so short it's not terribly useful. They're also not terribly clear under good conditions inside a car anyway. I'm curious about MURS radios which seem to be a little more potent.

Small White Car
05-16-2011, 01:06 PM
FSR's.

One for the lead, one for the sweep and one every 8-10 cars, preferably cars with passengers and people who really know each other that way your max range only has to bee a hundred yards or so and you can relay info down the line.

Most important is to forget about an organized run, you give a destination and tell folks here are the ways to get there but keep up and follow the leader is the most fun, if you are insistent at keeping a group together then you need corner markers, cars up front who will sit and wait until the previous 'sweep' goes by and make sure everyone got turned in the right direction and then takes up the sweep but that takes serious planning and work and frankly who needs that.

I have used your typical radios on several cruises and they work pretty good. Main thing is pick a channel that is long range over short range. If I remember correctly channel 15 to 22 are the good ones to use.

I had my radio on 22 all day yesterday. Just before I headed down to meet up with you guys, I scanned every channel but I didn't get anything. FYI, I ALWAYS have my radio with me and I'm usually on 22, I don't have subchannels, so no privacy, but it's still handy. You should pick a channel when you organize a cruise, that way anyone lurking has a way to communicate with us if they happen to catch up.

It was nice to meet you. Sorry about yesterday, people at the front freaked out and it was no big deal. The rest of the cruise was fantastic. If we do it again next month, you in?

The people in the front didn't freak out, we got tickets, :lmfao:... I had my ticket signed off before I got home... It's not my first ticket & it won't be my last...
Ya can't let a bag of CHiP's and Mr. Ranger stop you from flogging,
I mean enjoying your car...

^ Ya, the first 15-20 cars did not panic. Some got tickets, the rest of us waited down the road a little ways. Then we all had a good laugh as/once everyone who came through got finished up. I would say that about car 20-30 panicked... So let's find cars 20-30 and beat them red!!!

But really, I think that they were nervous because at the point they started turning around, we still didn't know what was going to happen. Heck one of the officers said that they were being DETAINED for vehicle violations... I figured that he either mis-spoke, or they were going to show up with 20 tow trucks... They could have just as easily been much stricter, since as we waited, we could hear cars coming up the canyon quite clearly, and the loudest cars were the ones at the front...

On the mullholland cruise I and a few others showed up late and we kinda just followed the person in front of us, got lost at one point, looked up directions and got to Neptune's Net. We all got there eventually and I've never seen something like this happen, the cruises are pretty well organized for a "show up if you want, just bring your car" club. Wish I hadn't missed this one, looked like fun.

I was in the back of the pack was told the road was closed. Since I didn't see any one up front come back I thought they headed out to Palmdale.

Ahaha, so this means our 2006 MX-5 which only ever had a rear plate is fine.

Every car in California is issued two plates, whether or not there was a place for it is not relevant. You register a car, you get two, all there is to it. The vehicle issued one plate will have less than four wheels.

Nice try though.
