I know what you mean. When I was stationed in Key West in the late 70's, just outside our main gate of the barracks was a hippy bar called the Green Parrot. They sold sandwiches, so I would stop there on the way back to the barracks after a night on the town. The girls, who had hairy legs and armpits, would be stoned and make our sandwiches at least twice the size you would get during the day.
I killed a lot of brain cells in the year I was in Key West at 19 years old and the drinking age was 18 then.
