Requirements: 30mpg+ on the freeway, sexyness.

AWD a plus, LSD a plus, FWD a minus.

Very borderline on the $15k, but possible. 30mpg on the fwy . . . maybe under ideal conditions. . .

Corvette C5 ZO6.

Besides maybe a couple Subaru's I can't think of any AWD vehicles that get 30+ on the highway.

I think a normal C5 or Z06 is the closest as far as fun versus mileage is concerned. A Cobalt SS (the turbo version) also gets 30+ highway I believe and is a high 13 sec/low 14 second car stock. With the LNF tune and minor mods it's a mid 13 second car.

They're still over 15k (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/searchresults.jsp?lastStartYear=1981&num_records=25&search_lang=en&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&search_type=used&distance=300&address=92807&marketZipError=false&style_flag=1&make=CHEV&model=COBALT&make2=&start_year=1981&end_year=2011&min_price=&max_price=16000&seller_type=b&transmission=&engine=&drive=&doors=&fuel=&max_mileage=&color=&keywordsrep=116117114098111&keywordsfyc=__dHVyYm8%2C__&keywords_display=turbo&sort_type=priceDESC&body_code=0&certified=&advanced=y&highlightFirstMakeModel=&showZipError=y&default_sort=newsortbyprice_DESC&awsp=false&systime=&sownerid=586852&rdm=1287897947283), sorry about that.

Good luck with the search. I think the closest you will get to your ideal car would be a Subie (other than the Vette), I think Evo's MPG is not quite as good.

Evo's and WRX's don't get anywhere near 30 on the highway AFAIK. I think it's closer to 25ish.

Vettes are too low, the AWD/ LSD is needed so I can tow my boat. I'm really sad to hear about the gas mileage but I might end up getting an STI. I will not get a normal Impreza if I do.

enkeivette
10-24-2010, 10:37 PM
To expand on Vettes are too low, I cant get my C3 into the driveway in front of my garage, gets stuck on the oil pan/ frame. Plus, the doors on Vettes are too low. I would have to dip the cab into the water to launch the boat.

An STI seems to be the way to go, I'd have a 4 door car, with enough traction and power to pull, enough sex appeal and power for a daily driver, and livable gas mileage.

This is my next car to desire. I had one in the late 80s and still wish I had it.
I lived in Lake Elsinore and drove the Ortega hwy to work 6 days a week in that roadster. It was a blast.
Have been watching ebay lately.
I have seen some nice ones, with V8 conversions. Just under 10K.

Those things are gay. I'm not going to buy a lowered truck with balla rims.

You know what I almost forgot about though... the Diesel Liberty. Guys are reporting 30mpg freeway with those things.

Also they're old. 92, not reliable. I'd trust my Vette over that thing.

Ok, what about a Jetta TDI? Apparently they can get up to about 50mpg (yes, fifty) and can tow about 2,000lbs on a braked trailor. (What was your towing requirement?) Used ones for well under $15k. Not exactly sexy, but not ugly either and can be pimped up a little with some paint and tint, etc., if you wanted to.

Traction pulling the boat out of the water is more of a concern. I used to spin my ex-gfs Jetta tires without gunning it from a stop. Those cars don't have traction, at all.

Can't you put a hitch on the front to help with putting the boat in and out of the water?

Bob

Yes, but with AWD and an electronic lock, it'll pull it out better than most trucks.

Sean, I think he was being serious. It's a common thing. This guy at my school put a 2 1/4 receiver on the front of his Prius.

I'm waiting for a call back from a Subaru dealer to take it in tomorrow.

I was serious. It was fairly common to have a receiver both in the front and back when I lived in Oregon. I had them on my F150 so I can mount a receiver mounted winch or hitch.

I talked with the dealer once again this morning to make sure I would get the answer I needed. And basically, to really check what I want them to, they want $200-$300 or even more. And when I can buy a used turbo for $300-$400, I don't see the reason to pay a mechanic to check it out. I can tell if the turbo is bad, they will do two tests, pull off the intake pipe to check the compressor wheel for play and pull off the downpipe to check for oil. But of course, this guy won't allow my to take his car apart.

Seeing as how the seller said that he would not be paying for any repairs, nor would he cut me a deal on the car, worst case scenario, I'm not in the mood for that car anymore. It has a problem, and it is too expensive to be sold as a problem car. Basically, he would rather sell the car to someone who doesn't know the difference for the full price.

I'm now leaning more towards the first car that I drove, a black one. It has more miles, but is $2200 less and it has a new turbo already.

So... I'm still looking. Also prob going to test drive a silver one this weekend. With a stupid WRX wing instead of the STI wing. I hate when STI guys do that. If I get the silver one, I'll probably end up getting an STI wing with the extensions. I might even do that whichever car I get.
