I'm gett'n kinda lonely in here, but fu*k it.
"The Chauffer" - Duran Duran
Rio is the first album I ever bought. I payed for it by mowing a lawn. I think it was like $7 (what I was paid for mowing the lawn) for a cassette in 1984+-. I remember getting a lesson from my friend's dad on negotiating. I shouldn't have just agreed to pay the asking price (because the seller, one of his sons, new what I had), should have offered $5. It's funny how these little things stick with you and can make serious differences over time.
Anyway, "The Chauffer" is one of my favorite songs from Duran Duran. Heck, the lyrics are even car related. Give it a listen some time.

I went to a Duran Duran release party for Rio. OK, "maybe" it was Rio, it was in 1981 or maybe 82. Ok, I'm not sure -but it was Duran Duran and it was an Album release party in the early 80's. The 80's is such a BLURR for me.

I don't know how many times I've listened to this piece. It is from her album "Medulla". Side note: How many commercially successful artists can you think of who make an entire album derived from vocal sounds? You may or may not dig what she's doing, but she fearlessly swings for the fences again and again. A true and rare artist who puts vision before all else.

Even many supposedly super star songs are pretty dismal in my opinion. I guess it should makes us appreciate how great good lyrics are. Think of Billy Joel's Piano Man, or <fill in the blank>. Sadly we are often only presented with the great successes of people, and rarely see just how much work (and in many cases neurosis) goes on behind the scenes.

I'm really a personal freedom kind of guy, I despise Big Brother in all his various forms. But I'm going to go ahead and say that if you're going on a bender with your infant on your hip, you're probably not quite ready for parenthood.
Too bad. Amy Winehouse (unlike Britney and various other American naughty girls) is genuinely talented. I wouldn't put her on the same level as Janice Joplin as a singer (not that she's trying that style, but the comparison has been made), but her lyrics are way, way above average.

Coldplay is interesting. With some of their older material if you were in the right mood, it was pretty cool (Yellow, Spies, etc.), but pretty dull otherwise. The new stuff, at least what I've heard so far is a little bit of a yawn/snore. Maybe if I did smack it'd sound better.

I actually dig this Coldplay album, much more so than the last ones at least. My probably with their last few (and Radiohead does this at times too) is that there didn't seem to be a drive or much of a percussion presence and that can bother me at times. Their last albums seemed to kinda dabble and not do much.

I love Okinawa and could easily imagine living there some day. The language here is Okinawan, hence the Japanese sub titles (if you didn't catch it :smack:). The first half of the song is fantastic in my opinion. Close to what I love most about music with lots of space and extreme sensitivity to timing and dynamics. The last half goes a bit poppy, but still tasteful in context.

Miss Sarajevo - U2
This is from Passengers, a collection of tracks used for soundtracks. It really reminds me of my time working at Tower records in the late 90s while at school. It was a short time, but I worked with an interesting girl named Venus and an even more interesting guy named Kyle Shostakovitch who occasionally came to work in a cape and listened to Iannis Zenakis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iannis_Xenakis) because he thought it was relaxing, not even I'm that nutty when it comes to music. I heard he made some fascinating 8mm films, but I never got to see any. :(
On a separate note, I knew a Bosnian girl in grad school who gave birth to her first son in a Serbian "detention" camp, surviving off dandelions soup picked from the yard. We Americans are so extraordinarily insulated from harshness that we are able to indulge some pretty . . . mmm, soft ideas about reality.

A great career as a real singer song writer. But for my dollar, it's the lesser known and earlier "Nebraska" album that is really great. Oh yeah, it will suck your will to live. Here's the lyrics from the title track "Nebraska". (Based on a true story.)
I saw her standin on her front lawn just twirlin her baton
Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died
From the town of lincoln nebraska with a sawed-off .410 on my lap
Through to the badlands of wyoming I killed everything in my path
I cant say that Im sorry for the things that we done
At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun
The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death
Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest
Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor neck back
You make sure my pretty baby is sittin right there on my lap
They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my soul
Be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Well sir I guess theres just a meanness in this world

For me generally, but depending on mood, my preference of these songs would be
Firesuite (great for cruising late at night by yourself)
Valley
Break Me Gently
Catch the Sun is cool, but I've gotta be in the right mood. In other words, it has less power to "put me in a mood". This may be an odd distinction for a non-musician.

I thought I might have posted this before, but apparently not. It's easily in the Top 5, and sometimes #1 piece I'd like to hear before I die, if I get a choice.
Bartok Piano Concerto #3 Mvmt. 2 - Adagio Religioso
I could bore with some interesting musicological details, but I'll stick to the basics. Bartok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartok) wrote this concerto more or less on his death bed with the hopes of it being a somewhat more popular piece that could make some money for his wife after he died. :(
I was always hoping, and still do, that ya'lls will mention what it is that you like about what you're listening to, or what it reminds you of, or whatever. A bit more than, "I'm listening to X". When you feel like it.
I especially like this from 6:30. Listen to the clouds of fast notes that create a sense of weightlessness and disembodiment in how they sit against the held notes of the winds, like at 8:30. I love the power and declaration from 9:40; the dissonance, that gives way to a gentle release at 10:10.
I'm not being technical at all, but does this description still sound like a foreign language?

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Title Track to the Motion Picture
Trailer to the original film
This is a pretty cool movie from the 80s, including David Bowie. The composer of this track is actually the young officer. The bald guy at the end is one of my favorite Japanese "personalities", commonly known as Beat Takeshi. The guy is a bit of a genius, having written many interesting movies himself, acting in them, and a painter.
He's also the creator of Takeshi Jo (Takeshi's Castle). Like Wipe Out? Well, this is the original from long ago and far away.

I was venturing out past the wire on Rhapsody and stumbled across these guys. Cool!
Calexico - Two Silver Trees
Check out this copy:
Calexico includes members of ragged country punks Giant Sand and OP8. Their music is the desolate sound of waking up alone in a deserted border town with only a pack mule and a half-empty bottle of Mezcal to keep you company. Lonely, desert-soaked ballads filled with Flamenco guitars and flashes of the best moments of Sergio Leone's Spaghetti westerns abound in Calexico's sound, while sublime hints of a distant mariachi band and the weeping notes of a pedal steel intertwine with the squeeze of an accordion. Joey Burns' hushed vocal will bring you to a dusty, heartbroken land of caballeros and bandidos. If Lee Marvin were still with us today, he'd be a Calexico fan.

Reading on Heavy Metal music, I found this;
In 1968, the sound that would become known as heavy metal began to coalesce. That January, the San Francisco band Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran's classic "Summertime Blues," from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording
Little did I know, Christmas of 67, when I asked Santa for the NEW Blue Cheer album I was part of history.:smack:
