It's a goddamn tradgedy that most Californias don't know what BBQ is. They think if you throw some burgers and hot dogs on a grill it's BBQ. The horror. The horror. No dude, that's grilling.

But for those who've had the real deal, you know that these are different worlds. The only 100% real BBQ I've had in CA, was the now long gone Mission Inn BBQ across the street from the Mission Inn in Riverside. That's it. I've had all kinds of attempts at BBQ, most recently pulled pork sliders at BJ's. They were edible, even decent, but not even close to what you can get all over the South for a modest price.

The super short difference is this:
Grilling = hot and fast (all kinds of food, but not usually tough meats with connective tissue)
BBQ = low temp and slllooooowww (tougher meats, typically pork, though some beef, with connective tissue)

This has been a public service announcement.

Lucky for me my Father-In-Law is from Georgia! He makes awsome BBQ. The only down side to this is when he makes chilli sometimes it's so hot you can't even eat it.

Blake's Place in Placentia is pretty solid as far as BBQ is concerned.

That's why I visit my brother in Texas 4 times a year. Each Mom & Pop BBQ place is better than the next.

Probably the best BBQ I've ever had was at Fat Matt's (http://www.fatmattsribshack.com/) outside of Atlanta.

That's a little odd about the Chili. That's definitely a South West thing, not a Southern Tradition. As far as I know, the only genuinely spicy Southern Food is Cajun, which can just about literally be dynamite.
