I have yet to peg out my 160 mph speedo because I'm afraid of the CHP, unlike Ron apparently.

There's got to be somewhere that we can drive so fast (legally) that at least one person from the group will die.

Why would we not want Ben to come. I think that if we did it illegally and in some way it hurt the government he would be our best supporter.

You may not hit it on salt and you almost certainly wouldn't hit it on a dry lake bed, like we have in CA. Maybe we can setup a flying mile at El Toro.

Well I guess you've volunteered yourself as I can't be involved according to the pole. Failure to succeed reflects on your inadequacy as a man.

Good luck. :nutkick:

At El Toro they will only let you do timed road racing with 1 car going at a time.

I just couldn't let the opportunity to break your balls pass by. :drink:

There is a dry lake bed in CA (don't recall exactly where) where the CA High Speed Timing Association (or something like that) does their version of speed week (like the salt flats) once a year or so. Maybe that's worth looking into to see if we could just join that regular event.

What might be cooler is a group trip to the actual salt flats for the real deal where the big boys play, but that's quite a commitment.

The longset runway is about 2 miles. The husband of a friend of Frankie's puts on this event http://www.musclecar1000.com/ . It is a very costly luxury adventure, $5500 !! Each ! They drive up the coast, staying at 5 star hotels.

Last year they did drag racing at El Toro. One car on each runway. Not sure of any other details , outta my league.:uh:

Interesting. Ricky from OCHP just called them recently and they said it wasn't allowed. Maybe it's a different organization? I'll have to try to call directly.

How far?

enkeivette
02-09-2010, 07:16 PM
It's about 10 hours, over 600 miles in Utah. Near a gambling city in Nevada, West Wendover.

It's doable, three day weekend maybe? Drive up Friday, stay in hotels Friday night and Run our cars Sat morning. Get towed home/ take an ambulance home later that Saturday.

El Mirage is the place in CA, not far at all. May 15-16 is their next event.

That is sooo close to my finals! I think I might be out by then, by like a day. Schedule it! If I'm out by then I'm down.

They might need a permit to run there though.

We should be able to run too... since we have a specific scientific purpose to run there, I don't see why not. :D

This is one time when I might make the exception to fill up with race gas. I wouldn't want to melt another piston running under full boost in overdrive.

I have been there its not that far and it has a pretty large open area although it is hard dirt not asphalt so I don't know how much that will affect top speeds.

Yeah as far as I know. I went back in 07 and we just drove on unloaded our bikes and went riding at that time I had my S-10 programed and I got that bad boy up to about 110 or so. I think there are rangers but I think I may have seen one the entire day.

As far as I know to it is public land open to public use. What rules apply exactly and how they're enforced I have no idea.

Of course it's wiser to do it with the timing organization as you will get a certified, no BS time, and there will be useful add-ons like emergency medical personnel and fire suppression experts.

The org does tech inspections and puts people into various categories. Asumming it's like the salt flats you have to move up progressively; you don't just go an drop the hammer on your first run. :nutkick:

I kind of just want to go without all of that. Too much government. :) I just want to put the hammer down. All the way down, for a few miles.

I think I need to a hold a series of lectures on the principles of anarcho-libertarian/capitalism.

It's a purely voluntary organization that helps create an environment in which those who join it can, to the greatest degree possible, safely and with certifiable measurability push the performance envelope of their vehicle.

Though if you want to give this a free-ball'n whirl, I might be in to help. I will have completed my CERT training by then, so I'll be qualified to perform triage on bodies, and maybe we can invest in some kind of data acquisition system so we can say what your "terminal" velocity was.

Incorrect. El Mirage dry lake has been the site of many 160MPH+ record runs.
Edwards dry lake was the birth of hot rodding in many ways.

If you don't install a roll bar, and 4 way belts first, you could die. It only takes a fart at that speed.;)

I'm only saying asphalt is faster than salt is faster than dirt. I saw a documentary on the speed channel with guys making runs with the timing association and this was their statement. I'm just reporting (though it makes sense to me.)

here is a link to El Mirage. There is no speed limit on the lake bed. There is now a fee for day use.
El Mirage Lakebed
The lakebed is a flat playa formed in an undrained basin. Silt and clay are deposited into this basin during periods of heavy rain. When the "lake" dries, a hard pan dry lakebed is left.

This hard, smooth surface is ideal for the unique activities conducted at El Mirage. These include ultra-light aircraft and gyrocopter flying, model rocketry, remote control airplane flying, landsailing and straight track racing. Many private pilots land on the lakebed to spend the day. The surface character has attracted the interest of many filming companies. Several major movies have scenes filmed here.

There is no speed limit on the open lakebed, but vehicle operators are responsible for their own safety, OHV rules and regulations, and knowing what is going on around them. The maximum speed limit is 15 miles per hour within 50 feet of camps and staging areas.

During permitted events, special speed limits and traffic restrictions are posted. Please watch for these events. To maintain a smooth surface, the lakebed is closed when wet or muddy. The California Highway Patrol, San Bernardino County Sheriff, and BLM Rangers patrol the area to encourage safe use by visitors.

Camping is permitted on the lakebed, but no more than 100 feet from the edge. This keeps the smooth center section of the lakebed clear for night riders.

Maybe we should limit this trip to only those with Z rated tires or better.

Here are speed ratings for tires....This is sustained speed, over 10 minutes

- M: 81mph or 130 km/h
- N: 87 mph or 140 km/h
- P: 93 mph or 150 km/h
- Q: 99 mph or 160 km/h
- R: 106 mph or 170 km/h
- S: 112 mph or 180 km/h
- T: 118 mph or 190 km/h
- U: 124 mph or 200 km/h
- H: 130 mph or 210 km/h
- V: 149 mph or 240 km/h
- Z: in excess of 149 mph or 240 km/h plus
- W: 168 mph or 270 km/h
- Y: 186 mph or 300 km/h

My tire size, 245/60/14 , are only available in S rating:censored: I hit 118 in 1/4 mile, still in third gear !
