View Full Version : Motorgen GMR Cruise February 20th!

Now that the date is determined, I wanted to start a new thread to avoid confusion.
The next cruise will be on February 20th and based on feedback from our last event I'm changing some things around. I'm moving the meeting point closer to the actual run (to keep everyone together better) and I'm also making the run shorter. This one is only about 43 miles so it won't be such a long day. Thanks again to everyone for showing up in January though - it was amazing to see 70-80 awesome cars of all different makes and models all cruising together!
The meet point for this cruise will be at a Kohl's in Upland with a very large parking lot. The address for Kohl's is:
1923 N Campus Ave
Upland, CA 91784
This puts us only about 5 miles or so from the beginning of the run. As I mentioned above, the total distance for the entire cruise is 43.3 miles. It should last about an hour and a half total. Once we finish the run the meeting point will be at a restaurant called La Tolteca (EXCELLENT Mexican food with a large parking lot and plenty of room for all of us inside unlike the last time at SuperMex). The restaurant is less than 5 miles from the end of the run, so again it should be a lot easier to keep together. The address for La Tolteca is:
429 N Azusa Ave
Azusa, CA 91702
I am going to shoot for a meet time at the Kohl's in Upland at 2:45p.m. We will leave the lot at 3:30p.m. I checked and the sun is due to set at 5:40p.m. on the 20th so we should have plenty of time to get off the mountain before it gets dark. With any luck, we should arrive for dinner between 5 and 5:30p.m.
Here is the route we are taking. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1923+North+Campus+Avenue,+Upland,+CA%E2%80%8 E&daddr=Glendora+Ridge+Rd+to:E+Fork+Rd+to:CA-39+S%2FSan+Gabriel+Canyon+Rd+to:429+North+Azusa+Av enue,+Azusa,+CA%E2%80%8E&geocode=%3BFbhmCgIdyab8-A%3BFdRKCgIdYvH6-A%3BFX5yCgIdWrv5-A%3BFdLFCAIdMt74-CnVHo6i7CfDgDGK-u_IBJ0heQ&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.132264,-117.642952&sspn=0.002087,0.005284&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=34.183122,-117.774124&spn=0.13235,0.338173&z=12) I have gone through and cleaned it up by hand (don't trust google maps completely) and it should be simple. I will have directions for everyone at the Kohl's and will hand them out before we leave. The drive is a lot of fun and the views are pretty incredible.
For anyone that wants to meet down in Orange County and caravan to Upland, I'm going to post up a time and location shortly.
If we have as many cars as last time, we'll probably try to break up into groups of 20-25 cars (we could break everyone up into groups of "fast," "normal," and "just out to enjoy the view" speeds).
For anyone that was at the last cruise, Motorgen - Videos - January 9, 2010 Ortega Hwy. and PCH@@AMEPARAM@@value="file=/vid/data/529/January_9_2010.flv&@@AMEPARAM@@529@@AMEPARAM@@January_9_2010.flv is the video and sets of pictures here (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showpost.php?p=40629&postcount=1), here (http://motorgen.com/pic/showgallery.php?cat=947), and here (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42959&postcount=207).
See everyone on the 20th!

Someone pointed out that their might still be snow and or black ice depending on weather between now and then. If that is indeed the case and things are unsafe, I'll have some kind of alternate plan ready.

Hey, new member here. I saw your cross-posting on srtforums.com and came over here to sign up. Count me in for the run. I'm not sure whether I'll bring my 05 SRT-4 or my 86 Mustang, but I'll be there. I'm game to meet in OC to caravan up to Upland.

Aaaarghh!!! I forgot that I have tickets to a SDSU basketball game that night, so I'm going to have to wait 'til the next cruise. Major bummer. I'm looking forward to the game (we're hopefully somewhere close to cracking the top 25), but I was really looking forward to meeting you all for the cruise. Oh well, I'll keep an eye out for whatever's happening in March.

According to the weather service, temp will rise to the 80's inland as a high pressure system settles east of here. Hopefully this will help the roads to dry out and clear of ice. The north side of the road will be in the shade and may still be icy.

Good to know, thanks Bob! The Mount Baldy site says that the roads are open and clear and there is no forcasted snow/rain this weekend. It should be a fun trip. We thought about bringing our other child (the dog) as she's never seen snow, let alone played in it, but I think the final decision is to leave her at home so we can stop and have some bomb digidy La Telteca.

Bad news bears have just entered town.
So I was just talking with a co-worker about our trip tomorrow to the mountain and he said well I hope you're not going to baldy. I said well we are. He said A the snow is rock hard and B good luck getting up the mountain. I said well the site says all the roads are open and clear.
My coworker said yes the roads are clear but the mountain is a small community and they can only hold so many people/cars so they hold you back until people start to leave thus making a line on the mountain, and when availability opens up they will let you into the mountain. I asked, even to drive through? He says yes as he was there 2 weeks ago and was one of the people in that line.
So.....we're in discussion now about what to do and if this is all accurate but I'm glad we were given the heads up.
Does anyone else have any insite as to this happening?

So my wife and I ran it today and it was great. The time of day is perfect. We ran at the exact time we would be going through and had plenty of light. Traffic was light and I didn't see a single cop all day (we actually ran two routes as well).
The first section, Glendora Ridge Road (12 miles) had some water on it but was mostly nice. It is unmarked (all one lane basically) so I was basically keeping it right around 25 mph. It was still nice and curvy though and the scenery is beautiful.
Now, the second section is where we'll have to make a decision. I went both ways with this today. The original route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=E+19th+St&daddr=Glendora+Ridge+Rd+to:E+Fork+Rd+to:CA-39+S%2FSan+Gabriel+Canyon+Rd+to:W+5th+St+to:34.129 835,-117.908149&geocode=FdjRCAId1uj8-A%3BFbhmCgIdyab8-A%3BFdRKCgIdYvH6-A%3BFX5yCgIdWrv5-A%3BFbrHCAId4Nz4-A%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=3&mrsp=5&sz=16&via=4&sll=34.129959,-117.904115&sspn=0.007869,0.021136&ie=UTF8&ll=34.188234,-117.781677&spn=0.12581,0.338173&t=h&z=12) has us taking a right at Glendora Moutain Road to the east loop and onto San Gabriel Canyon road. Going this way is longer, but the road is more mellow. Nice scenery though and it's a direct shot down to La Tolteca.
The alternative (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=E+19th+St&daddr=Glendora+Ridge+Rd+to:Glendora+Mountain+Rd+to :34.14676,-117.89257+to:W+5th+St+to:W+5th+St&geocode=FdjRCAId1uj8-A%3BFbhmCgIdyab8-A%3BFfbLCQIdiu_5-A%3B%3BFbrHCAId4Nz4-A%3BFbrHCAIdLN34-A&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=2&mrsp=3&sz=12&via=3,4&sll=34.137952,-117.805367&sspn=0.125885,0.338173&ie=UTF8&ll=34.183122,-117.774811&spn=0.125817,0.338173&t=h&z=12) is to turn left and take Glendora Mountain Road all the way down. It's shorter, but I actually liked the drive better. The other downside besides being shorter is that it makes it a slightly longer drive to the restaurant. Nothing major, but it is longer.
When my wife and I got to La Tolteca I counted about 40 open spaces. We rolled in right around 5. Their was plenty of seating inside and I'm guessing next Saturday would be less busy (I figure some people were out for Valentine's Day tonight). The food was incredible as always :)
I've checked the weather for next week and it looks clear. If it was anything like today, it was just about perfect. So we're definitely on, but which route does everyone prefer?

Ok so Sean was very kind not to bash me in this post but today I totally deserve it. I was sitting co-pilot and took us the wrong direction not once, but TWICE and almost a 3rd but he caught me on that one! Total detour miles were about 60 miles. Ug. :(
The first of which was the wrong way on the 210 for about 12-15 miles before I figured it out, and then the second was the wrong way on the mountain which resulted in our experiment route and I didn't realize we took the wrong way until we were at the bottom of the mountain so we had to head back up.
My prego brain is totally SHOT! But we eventually made it through the mountain and we're home safe and sound now. I'll have Sean post a few photos of the trip tomorrow so you guys can see how pretty it was. It was very green, quiet, and peaceful. Make sure you go slow through the first part without any divider lines or else you'll have a head on collision in no time, but the other parts let loose and don't go over a cliff.
I won't be seeing you guys next weekend (prior obligation) but have fun and make sure you follow the route. It's perfect now and I won't be calling the shots. :P

Don't feel to bad Alexis. Shannon has co-piloted for me a few times and lets just say she does not quite have the grasp of what a navigator does. We went out to my cousins for the superbowl and went through the 74. I printed directions and told her I had been to their house once over a year ago. As I was driving out of the canyon I had to continually ask her where to do at streets. I turned to her in a very calm tone (and yes it was calm but you would not have known it from her reaction) that I view a navigator as someone who guides me on where to go. Man if look could kill. :crutches: She then said I thought you knew where you were going. I just sat there and thought to myself, do people routinely print directions to places they know how to get to?

I'm still a maybe but leaning towards in. I don't think I'll be trying to stay up in the front this time due to my front tires being 9 years old and thus not very sticky. They also don't deal with gravel or sand well at all...

I removed the windshield washer fluid reservoir and all my relatives, parents, and non-car friends thought I was crazy. I'd never go as far as removing the wiper blades and arms though... lol
Plus, it's easy to crack the windshield on an F-body when removing them.

i was infront of you for the first half and our group was moving pretty damn good the only reason we werent going even faster was because of the stock civic in front of us he could only go so fast lol  thats a clean AMG you got there those rocks were killing my windshield and i was hoping they didnt make it back to you
haha yeah that debris definitely sucked, but the 5 freeway has been almost as bad on the front of my car so no worries. I could tell you were itching to go quicker and once that small group of cars pulled over we got going a bit faster

yes i believe so. location is still unknown but thats when the next one is supposed to be
and hopefully the exhaust sounds good. its from a turbod neon so we will see how it runs on a N/A car. it has to resonaters on it and thats it no muffler.

The next cruise is supposed to be the 13th. I'm working on a variety of ideas. I just have to make sure I can get it organized efficiently before proceeding.

We talked about it the other day. One possibility, but may be a bit much to but together in short order is a Mulholland/Topanga run. If you've got any ideas, share them with the group.

I'm trying to remember a route we took in 73 when I was with Tri City Vettes.
I'm going over the map now.
I sent Sean the Jay Leno Run and we could end that at BoB's Big Boy in Burbank.

I would like to have a run from Buttonwillow to San Luis Obisbo on CA58 and back down PCH. A great run, but a little far.

I get about 15 when my foot's in it. 26+- when cruising on the FWY. LSx FTW!
Here's (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=I-5+N&daddr=Cerro+Noroeste+Rd+to:34.996254,-120.438995&hl=en&geocode=FZgbEwIdRgTq-A%3BFWT5EwId9L_k-A%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=10&via=1&sll=34.874665,-120.160217&sspn=0.671484,1.454315&ie=UTF8&ll=34.397845,-118.979187&spn=2.030549,4.22699&z=9) another full day run. The following just shows the targeted segment. It's a run some of my biker friends who ride up to watch MotoGP take every year. Apparently one of the best kept, nicest, largely untraveled roads in CA.

That is a long ways. I don't see that being only 2 hours. That is more like 4 hours. We would have to plan an early start time. I drove that YEARS ago. It is slow to get to and traffic to get there and back is a bitch at times.
Yes, it is a GREAT road.

I will give that road a try and return on 58.
I got 12mpg on the GMR run. I usually average 16mpg around town and if I keep my foot out of it, I can get 24mpg on the freeway at 80mph. The boost gauge I notice moves in the opposite direction of the gas gauge. Higher the boost the quicker the gas gauge moves down.

No no. Just that segment of 110 miles is 2.5 hours. Getting there and back would be much more. It's a FULL day with stopping and eating, etc., think 10am to 10pm or something like that.

SO--how many do you think can do that big a run? The cost of gas alone would make it difficult for some--including me. With some couple of months lead time, more could go. If I'm wrong..............:inout:
Don't get me wrong I like the idea...just need to plan for it.

I'm up for the 13th. I was hoping there would be another run soon, since I missed this last one. I don't know the LA area that well, so I don't have a lot of input on a potential route. I'll leave that to the locals. If the route could be reasonable to reach for those of us from the San Diego area, that would be sweet.
