Hey everyone,
Instead of doing a cruise this month, we've decided to do a dyno day at Racers Edge Tuning on Saturday, February 21st. The plan is to be at the shop from 9a.m. to 5p.m. on the dyno, and then we will caravan over to our normal meeting spot at Nick's Burger in Fullerton for the meet between 6:00p.m. and 6:30p.m. The address for RET is:
Racers Edge Tuning
11434 Downey Ave Downey Ca 90241
562-445-7001
and the address for Nick's Burger is:
Nick's Burger
1712 W. Orangethorpe Ave
Fullerton, CA 92833
For the dyno day the shop can handle a maximum of 45 cars. The cost for the dyno is 3 pulls for $45. For all those planning on running their cars I am requiring everyone to register here. (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1184&day=2009-2-21&c=1) In order to register you must be a registered user on the site. Registration is extremely easy and should take you less than 45 seconds. If anybody has a problem signing up or registering please shoot me an email at SeanPlunk@gmail.com. For all those that sign up, please bring cash on the dyno day. Exact change is preferred as it allows the guys at RET to cycle through the cars faster and reduces down time.
I am really looking for a wide variety of different makes and models to keep things interesting, so please don't hesitate to sign up regardless of what you drive. Sorry to our AWD friends, but this dyno is only for FWD and RWD vehicles (if you want to stop by the shop and hang out though, we'd love to have you along). For all the participants we will be taping every car run. We will not only be taping the car itself, but we'll have a second camera on the computer monitor as it spits out the results. We'll cut the two sets of videos together after the meet and all the videos will be posted in our videos section afterwards.
At the shop we will provide some sodas and water. As far as lunch is concerned we haven't decided what we want to do yet, but I'm including a poll on the main thread here (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1097) so please vote if you're coming and we'll make a decision in the next week or two.
We've had a lot of fun at the meets with a really wide variety of cars and all makes and models. We're looking for the same diversity for this, so I hope to see you all out there. Here (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13370&postcount=114) and here (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13371&postcount=115) are pictures from the last meet and Motorgen - Videos - Turnbull Canyon Run Motorgen Meet January 10, 2009@@AMEPARAM@@value="file=/vid/data/532/TurnbullCanyon1.flv&@@AMEPARAM@@532@@AMEPARAM@@TurnbullCanyon1.flv and Motorgen - Videos - Turnbull Canyon Run and Motorgen Meet January 10, 2009 Part 2@@AMEPARAM@@value="file=/vid/data/532/TurnbullCanyon2.flv&@@AMEPARAM@@532@@AMEPARAM@@TurnbullCanyon2.flv are videos from our last cruise. Whether you want to dyno or you just want to hang out with a bunch of cars guys, I hope to see you on Feb. 21st :)

Welcome to the board Ryan. Now tell me about your car :D
I see you have a 03 VW GTI with a HX35 turbo. How much boost are you running and what are the details? My buddy is a Volkswagen freak, he's going to love seeing your car.

Not sure how much boost I'll be running...somewhere around 20psi. Just looking to get a baseline number with the new turbo. 1.8L 20valve, rods, cams, water/methanol injection, 8.5k rpm...I'll be happy with around 350whp or so at the dyno day. Goal is 400whp on pump gas, but not sweating it at the moment.
Thanks for the hospitality!

Wow, that sounds like a pretty stout setup. My brother has a Turbo Buick with methanol and I think he's running about 20psi also. So the motor is fully built? How much do GTi's weigh, like 3000lbs?

I didn't know those were 5 valve motors. Guess that has something to do with them still making power with forced induction that high in the rev range.

Motor has rods, cams, springs, and lifters. Nothing super crazy...the head flows pretty good up top, but definitely could use a lot of work, haha. I just started rev'n to 8.5k, so it'll be interesting to see what it does that high.
Are these dyno days frequent? I'm always looking for discounts on dynojet dyno days, hah.

I think going forward we'll do them at least 2x a year. Probably one for FWD/RWD only, and then an AWD/RWD/FWD one as well. I'll keep you posted :drink:

Volkswagen, Audi, Ferrari and Yamaha/Toyota have subsequently introduced five-valve engines as well. It is arguable if five valve configuration gives any benefit over four valve designs:crutches::crutches::crutches::crutches: :crutches::rant:

That was actually going to be my first guess, but I actually think it is wrong. Maybach was "mass producing" these in the late 1800s. Perhaps it depends on what you're calling a "car company". When did Caddy come out with this engine? Must have been early 1900s I'mma guess'n.

I'm pretty sure our German pals were cranking them out long before that for their "horseless carriages" and whatnot. I think the 1916 Caddy has another major claim to fame though. It was the first car to be laid out like what we think of as a car, that is clutch, brake, accelerator, with a gear shift in the center, etc. An Englishman used this as the base for making a cheaper version which in turn was licensed to the Germans and Japanese, et. al. (forgot the names). These, not the Model T were the first mass produced cars in the form of a car we would recognize still today. That Caddy might also have been the first car with an electric starter and a key, but I'm not positive.

It's a factory up grade plug n play setup .It comes with a larger turbofold(turbo and manifold combined) lager injectors ,pcm upgrade with 3 bar tip and map sensors and higher pressure fuel system...toys wich allow a person to adjust boost from 1 to 3settings 8 psi the lowest to about 20 psi the highest. hom (high octane mode ) allows more timing but can only be used with 100 +++ octane. so thats it:bigthumbsup:

Yes the turbo and manifold are one but the 02 housing is separate that part can be enlarged easily for better flow. the CHR can be removed for servicing as well. does that make any sense? sorry that I can't explain it any better.
I never dynoed the car on regular 91 octane but I always mix alittle 100 octane unleaded fuel with 91 octane unleaded the car just runs alot smoother.

Have you ever considered doing methanol injection? That's what my brother is using on his Turbo Buick. He'll be at the dyno day (as long as he fixes his power master in time) so you can check it out. Vettezuki also mixes Torco with his gas for a little extra octane.

It was fine once wired correctly. Simply an installation problem.

I think too much alcohol involved in the install - and not the alcohol in the tank :rolling:

stock motor, a 66mm turbo, and not enough fuel lol. the power gets transferred through a ACT 6 puck clutch to a Quaife 6 speed transmission with Quaife LSD and ARP bolt kit. car sits on Bilstein PSS9's. I'm limited by my small injectors but I'm shooting for 425+whp on pump (where it starts to lean up a little). Who knows, I might get a little crazy when I get to the dyno and throw in some VP MS109 that I have sitting in the garage and play with fire.

Wow Steve, it sounds pretty serious :)
How bad is the torque steer with that much power?
This may also be a dumb question, but injectors aren't that expensive usually, why don't you just swap in a bigger set?

Alright everyone, 72 hour bump. For those attending, I am trying to work a schedule with basically 5 cars going per hour from 9 until 6 with an hour lunch break either at noon or 1. If anyone has a preference for what part of the day they would like to try to go please post it in this thread. (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1097)
I will do my best to accommodate everyone but it may not be perfect. I will wait for those attending to reply either today or tomorrow before putting the schedule together on Friday. Also for those attending please try to bring exact change because it allows things to move more quickly when Greg isn't having to go make change for everyone. Remember it's $45 for the 3 pulls. Also remember if you guys have extra folding chairs to bring those too. You'll get tired of standing after an hour or two and there isn't enough room in the waiting area for all of us at one time. We're planning on setting up some tables outside though so people can hang out. We still have about 10 spots left to dyno if anyone else would like to come and join us. Please sign up here if you're interested. (http://www.motorgen.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1184&day=2009-2-21&c=1)
After we finish at the dyno we're going to cruise over to Nick's Burger for the meet and should arrive before 6:30p.m. Nick's is in Fullerton for anyone who wants to come join us. Here is the address:
Nick's Burger
1712 W. Orangethorpe Ave
Fullerton, CA 92833
If anyone has any questions shoot me an email or give me a call. All my info is in the OP. Thanks again everyone.

I'm keeping track in a spreadsheet here. (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=p6VwfBgc7tSy6VH6bYisJHw) As people request certain times I'll update it. For the slots that are open we'll just do first come, first serve throughout the rest of the day for the remaining registered users.
I think a good size group of us will be there all day if people just want to stop by and hang out for a while :)

Hey Ian,
I have only added people with preference on the spreadsheet so far. Everyone else we'll just kind of manage on a first come, first serve basis. Your car is beautiful by the way. Do you have long tubes, or just a midpipe and catback? Just curious. I think you'll have no problem hitting 450rwhp. Bring ice to ice the blower down :D

I see, well then I have really no preference on when I run.
Thank you very much, shes my baby...
And im really looking for a real world hp number.. never will i be able to ice my blower on the freeway or anything like that.. so i prob wont.
I am interested however in octane booster. What kind of gains have you seen from before and after. I have tried the Lucas brand as i was reccomended it and found it smooths out the car. I wouldnt imagine i would have ample time to put it in after the 2nd run and wait long enough for it to mix properly right?
Also, are these runs going to be with a wideband read out? I appologize if it was covered but i havent read through the 13 pages.. lol
My mod list:
MGW Orange Shifter
Aftermarket clutch
K&N Intake
TR6's
Fiore Micro Click Clutch Quadrant
2.8 Steeda Pulley
Billet Flow Idler
Invictus/APS cooling head mod
Maximum motorsports 4 point roll cage
Cobra R brembo's
Russell stainless lines
Hawk Pads in rear
Amazon racing tune
Full Bassani Exhaust (mid-lengths, catted x-pipe, and cat back)
Full Synthetics

I have a lot of the same mods, but you have more :hail:
They can do wideband if you already have a dongle for it and they can get to it easily as I recall.
I'm not big on octane boosters - the bottle stuff isn't supposed to do much of anything. If you're using something like Torco though that would do it. I'm not sure why you would need it actually. Did you actually get a dyno tune or did you mail order a chip from amazon?

Well thanks, far from as many as i want though..
Well i suppose i could pull a o2 from my x if they want to put it in there..no tail pipe wideband? Obviously it would be a little less effective after cat but i would like to log the A/F to check them..
I dont run a booster a lot but i had a tuning issue and found it (did) make the issue go away. Found out my plug gap was too tall. Took them down to .28 and my studder/chug went away.
I have been to the dyno i think like 4 or 5 times now. Every time i just send Rick at amazon my log files and he adjusts as necessary. So its kinda both :D
Apparently per the svtp site there are two more cars going that have almost 1000hp a 2valve and 4 valve.. pretty excited to see that!

Hmmm. I don't think Greg does wideband out the tailpipe generally. I don't know why you would be having tuning issues. I have a 2.76 upper with a K&N, a UPR catted x midpipe, and borla stingers and my tune has never had any problems that I've noticed. What kind of issues are you seeing?
Well not so much issues since I have gotten my latest tune.
I have about 7k miles on my plugs and im just going to replace them to take that out of the equation. I was getting spark blow out (i think) before i re-gapped them and thought possibly it was injectors or possibly it was my tune. He sent me a new tune with 5% more fuel and a little less timing up top after i mentioned it to him. All seems well but ocasionally i will get a little "hickup" when its pulling usually from 4000-5500 somewhere in that range.
The first few times i was on the dyno (originally before these problems) it was in the lean range further then i would have liked. So i sent him the logs, he adjusted and i went back a few times till we got to where i am now. It has since gotten better but being that they are not cheap motors being spot on would be great for me.
I can only assume with the headers it makes the car harder and different to tune then others without?
oh and nice mods! i cant wait to hear what your car sounds like.

Yeah, I'll be there for sure all day. I know what you mean about your car. I feel the same way about everything - I don't want to spend any money unless I have to because I'm nervous about the way things are going. Hey Sean, so they didnt log the air fuel ratio ? I sent my dyno graph to my tuner and he requested to see the AF ratio. If there is any way possible to get it please let me know.
Also keep me up dated on any meets or dyno days coming up. I really like to cruise but the only day i can is on Sundays so try to set up a Sunday cruise. I dont care if it's 6 hours straight lol. I just want to drive !

They weren't it's part of the reason why "sometimes" they could move quickly through cars. I'm afraid your tuner is out of luck on the A/F. :(

Yeah, sorry about the A/F. It's too difficult to do it with that many cars. I will definitely keep you updated on cruises. We're doing one next month and one in May for example :D

I'm dead tired so I'm going to bed, but thanks to everyone who came. Sorry the day didn't quite go as smoothly as I would have liked (I think I was over ambitious on scheduling), but overall I was still quite happy with all the great cars and people I got to see and meet today. Thanks everyone :drink:

We had a great time Sean. Thanks again. Not only did my son in law get his car dynoed that was the first time he saw a dyno in action. He just got back from his 2nd tour over in Iraq so its time for him to put all the crap he saw over there behind him and have some good ol American fun.
Oh and now he wants me to help him build a LS C3 Vette like Ben (Vettezuki) has. I must say an LS engine looks great in a C3

Oh, and I didn't hit 460RWHP, but I was very happy with the results overall. I put down 454 RWHP and 462 RWTQ. More importantly though I picked up 10 to 30 rwhp and tq throughout the entire rev range. Greg had my old graph from last time and the difference is fairly dramatic. I love my Cobra :judge:

I got it used, but for new one is about $629. Used is better it's cheaper here's the link http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=177
try to look for JB3 PNP and the price is around $350-$425 don't pay more then that. Yes I have Logic HVI intake and chip only. If I have DP and IC would gain lots more number.

Wow, just an intake and chip for 324 rwhp and 345 rwtq - that's awesome. Maybe I'll get him an intake for father's day. I think he wants to wait for the warranty to go out before doing the chip. Thanks for the advice on finding the chip.
As far as upcoming events if you want to come run at California Speedway on the 7th we'll be there, and then we're also doing probably a PCH cruise and meet on the 14th :drink:

Yes, there will be no judgement. Except for every time I'm faster than you in my NA Vette than you are in a pullied Cobra, at which point all bets are off. :smack: Anyway, it seems except for very dialed in cars and drivers, nobody does the times they should at the street legals at Fontana.

No, the problem was 15psi on a stock computer designed for 8psi. I have honestly heard it's impossible to run a 2.8 upper pulley without a tune. Usually you'd blow your motor real quickly doing that. I'm glad he had Greg tune it and his numbers are very nice
